Fasting does not necessarily mean not eating at all (as Moses did up on the mountain) but simply abstaining from things you usually eat such as meat, dairy and alcohol. I suspect the latter is the case with your music teacher.

Orthodox have a couple of fasting periods that last 40 days (more for Lent), where we fast from meat and dairy items (all animal products). However, we are also supposed to do our best to fast from other things as well--staying away from forms of entertainment (TV, movies, the computer), and spend the time in prayer and spiritual reading. Also, we're supposed to fast with our body as well--our eyes, our ears, our mouths (tongues), our hands, etc. So, it is certainly possible to fast from other things than just food.

I fasted 37 days a few years ago. I stopped short of 40 days because I didn't want people around me making a "big deal" about it being a 40-day fast.

I had water and some caffeine at times. No food. I did also drink broth from bullion cubes.

It is only by the Grace of God that I was able to do so.

It was an incredible journey.

But it's hard to study and go to the gym when you're hungry.

Uh, the headaches come from the Caffeine being leeched from your system.

Personally I can't see a point in having a 40 day fast. In fact I know some people who have been permanently damaged because of it.

For some reason fasting=extreme rightousness was the idea in Jesus's time and we haven't really lost that idea.

Yeah, I've gone on some long "fasts", oh wait that was anorexia which was a disorder - well almost the same thing.

If you want to obey or say, remind yourself that you are dependant on God then a day or two is fine. Believe me, trying to blackmail God or reach some "higher level" by fasting has no relevance to the intention of fasting.

No, its not nearly the same thing. The only similarity is to suppress the body’s need for food and ends here. The reasons behind this suppression differ like day and night. Denying yourself food and devoted yourself to God in prayer is fasting.

i think it was really good of all you people that fasted for such a long time. For most people 1 day would be really hard. Well done.
i wonder if the guy that fasted for ages in that box up above London was a christian. Do any of you know?
if anyone is fasting just now, then keep at it. Its hard work.
