I'm assuming the coordinator doesn't have a broader plan for tonight's RCIF classes, so I texted my buddy that I co-teach with and asked what he thought about spending our class time in prayer for the Pope's soul and maybe a discussion about the Church process that we'll all be seeing unfold over the next few weeks.

Does anybody have any ideas for good conversations to have with catechumens when the Church is in this moment in history? Our class has shrunk cause some of them received their Sacraments at Easter Vigil, but we still have some adults and teens.

I thought I might go through the "nine steps" that I posted a thread on yesterday. Sometimes I think little details like destroying the Fisherman's ring and the hammer can be interesting to newbies.

If there's any traditional practices we can lead them on that would be a big bonus.

Thanks all!

I think your idea is an excellent one. I know when going through RCIA topics like what happens when the pope dies, always had people’s attention. Timely too.

The discussion on bad popes was good as I recall and how these things do not affect the teachings of the Church. How something becomes dogma and the steps taken for it to get to that point was interesting. The process of canonization was another one… there are several that stick out in my mind.

Oh yeah the canonization topic might be good too since Carlo Acutis' has been delayed. I could tie that into step six "Sede Vacante" where no major decisions or appointments are carried out and only routine Church governance is conducted by the Camerlengo.

Sounds like the classes are good. Nothing worse than boring RCIA.

They're definitely working, I know that much. I think we had 40+ come into the Church this year. This RCIF thing the coordinator's doing is clever, basically when parents come to her saying they want their kids to receive their sacraments, she manages to negotiate their participation and a lot of families end up coming in together.

@Gnarwhal, what was discussed and how did it go?
We played a video that described the whole process from the time the pope passes to the announcement of a new pope. The class makeup was a little different than normal and one of the high school girls is more interested in talking about her theater stuff than the actual discussion topics. But we still prayed for Pope Francis when we closed. Not ideal but oh well lol

Yeah she and the rest of her family I believe, though I haven't seen her dad in a while.
