For those in a relationship, on what occasions do you give each other gifts? I suck at choosing gifts, it takes me ages and I always panic about whether I've picked something stupid. There's Christmas, birthdays, Valentine's day, anniversary... At this rate I'm going to be in perpetual anxiety all year round.

Do you agree as a couple not to exchange gifts on certain occasions? Or do you agree a price limit? Do you tell each other specifically what you want? Or go shopping for things you like together?

If you're in quite a committed relationship (e.g. engaged or heading that way) is it customary to give gifts to your boyfriend/girlfriend's family at Christmas and birthdays?

Well we have a joint account, so it really does make gift giving very odd, as no matter the present they've already paid for 50% of it.

Generally we've kept to small gifts, things that the other would like but don't fall into the usual budgets. Books a lot of the time for example.

Birthdays and Christmas are tricky, because I've always been bad at them, I've missed many of my siblings birthdays and christmas presents, the partner is somewhat better so there side of the family tend to get jointly signed gifts.

Its nice to get/give gifts but I am always cautious about it in a relationship. Sometimes people get love confuse with getting gifts. As in they love you give them gifts, so when you don't they love you less.

Me and my fiance don't really care about gifts. Mainly because of the distance and the fact I am disabled and shes out of work for now. We also don't really celebrate anniversaries because we think every day should be special, not just once a year. Does this mean I won't get her things (or vica versa)? No. Shes still special to me and once and awhile I'll get her something. But it won't be anything to amazing. For example my one married friend, his wife expects some sort of diamond gift every year. Which to me leans towards what I said earlier about being confused about what love is.

The wedding rings me and my fiance are getting are simple silver wedding bands. No diamonds, no fancy patterns...etc. When the time comes where we are financially stable I may buy her a diamond ring for christmas and surprise her with it. As for getting others gifts. She told me not to really bring gifts to her family because filipinos are simple people. They care more about being with each other then gifts.

Still, I told her I am bringing her (my fiance) something and my godchild something. Nothing fancy mind you. I am also getting her mother something because she is so accepting of me and being a single parents whos a pastor, shes an amazing woman. I want her to see I do love her as my new mother.
