John 2:
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” 20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.

Just before Jesus physically died on the cross, Luke 23:
46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last.
Jesus' spirit was separated from his body. That's how Jesus died. That's how everyone died. Here the term "spirit" includes the soul as well.

Now his spirit was in the safe hands of God. Further, only God can kill the soul, Matthew 10:
28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
Jesus' body was dead, but his spirit and soul were protected by God.

After his resurrection and ascension, Stephen was martyred. Just before he died, he said similarly: Lord JESUS, receive MY SPIRIT.

How can the word spirit there be soul when you look at the comparison between these verses (for example)

Two spirits are noted here, the Spirit (Pnuema) and our spirit (Pnuema)

Romans 8:16 The Spirit G4151 (Pnuema) itself beareth witness with our spirit G4151 (Pnuema),
that we are the children of God

We as a whole are spirit (Pneuma) soul (Psyche) and body (Soma) this is pointed out to us here

Thes 5:2 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole
spirit G4151 (Pneuma) and soul G5590 (Psyche) and body (Soma) be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus mentions his soul (Psyche) here

John 12:27 Now is my soul G5590 (Psyche) troubled; and what shall I say?
Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

And when we come to here he commends his spirit (Pnuema)

Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said,
Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit G4151 (Pneuma) and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. G1606 (ekpneo)

The apostles point out what was written aforetime and mention his soul (Psyche) here

Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul G5590 (Psyche) in hell,
neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. (From Psalm 16:10)

Even though we know the body (itself) without the spirit (even a man's own spirit) would be dead and Christ was dead on the cross.

Into thy hands I commend my spirit G4151 (Pneuma) and having said thus,
he gave up the ghost, G1606 (ekpneo)
  1. to breathe out, breathe out one's life, breathe one's last, expire
