Welcome to the future, my brothers and sisters. Also, remember that a space probe was launched today to Jupiter's moon Europa. So, two launches in 24 hours. What a treat, brother. :)

Quote from the Guardian: "As the rocket’s 71-metre (233ft) Super Heavy booster separated 40 miles (65km) above the Earth, the upper stage pushed on to an altitude of nearly 90 miles, looping around the planet at 17,000 mph before splashing down in the Indian Ocean as planned. SpaceX staff erupted in cheers and applause as the falling booster reignited three of its Raptor engines, slowed its rapid descent and swung towards the “mechazilla” launch tower, where it was held fast by the mechanical arms, labelled “chopsticks”."

From Space Magazine:

From the British:

Europa Clipper Launch (October 14, 2024):

You are welcome. I sometimes "space" out, so no wonder why astronomy and rockets are cool to me. Outer space was my favorite subject as a kid, and still is in the top favs to this day. :)

Spock would say "fascinating".

Mr. Spock is one of the greatest science fiction characters of all time. I've been a Trekker almost as long as I can remember from way back in the 70s. Astronomy and space travel are among my favorite topics.

I have been a Trekkie since 2013 or so (young teenager), and most certainly by 2014 as Star Trek was on Netflix at the time, and I spent hours binging it. Astronomy has been my interest since the end of the second half of the 2000s, cos my room had glow in the dark planets stuck on my wall. Then, the Astronomy periodical was gifted to me, and I have devoured those magazines from 2009 to 2012. Man, those were the days.

Also, my parents gave me a book about the Universe from DK in 2009 or so as well.

Apparently, there is a 2020 version of the 2008 book:

Maybe if you would have posted Elon Musk told 1000 people how to receive God's free gift of Eternal Life
He’s boosting Trump now, which is basically the same thing.

Maybe if you would have posted Elon Musk told 1000 people how to receive God's free gift of Eternal Life last month i would have been impressed. But shooting a rocket into sky so what.

The tower catching the booster was especially impressive I thought. Watching that made me go "ohhhh...."

It's a world history first but I'm sure it seems unimpressive to some. I'm not in that group though. I think innovation is actually kinda cool... Towers catching rocket boosters? Count me in the nerd club that does find that fairly impressive.

And many who would be praising him for advancing the space program hate him instead because of that.

IME, he had more good will from making EV's mainstream. SpaceX is neat and all, but making EV's ubiquitous could be world-changing. But it looks like he might be screwing that up.

Advancements in science is usually a really big huge deal to the left.

For me, I can support Musk's space program, but still not like the guy for buying up Twitter, inventing the brain chip, and supporting Trump.

As a moderate, one must be able to separate a guy's space program from his politics. Space is cool, brother, and has been for me for over 15 years. Now, I do not worship a man, except for Jesus, but I am proud that Musk's company SpaceX achieved a sci-fi milestone in real life. Even though SpaceX may have some ethical issues with employee treatment, overall, the company has advanced aerospace technology by many years. :)

Remember Tintin (a European comic that is popular around the globe)? There was a comic book on how Tintin went into space on a single stage to orbit (SSTO) rocket that could return back to Earth and land. Finally, in 2024, this is almost a reality, with both stages of Musk's rocket safely returning to Earth.

This was my favorite comic as a kid back in the late 2000s, but it was written during the mid-20th century.

I agree with you there. Maybe we can both agree that Jesus rising again on the 3rd day in accordance with the Scriptures is impressive, but also a rocket being caught by chopsticks is impressive also, just not as impressive as Jesus. :)

One can appreciate Jesus, and still enjoy scientific innovations. There is a Psalm about that, shown below. Just ignore the last paragraph of the devotional, as that stuff covers Eucharistic miracles. I believe in those miracles as a Catholic, but Protestants do not. But the main point of the devotional is that Faith in Jesus and enjoying science can go hand-in-hand.

---------------------------------
Psalm 111:2 (NKJV): The works of the Lord are great, Studied by all who have pleasure in them.

Well if Elon Musk has never believed in Jesus and become a born again child of God. What good will catching rockets do him after he has died.

Maybe he is like another rich person who thinks he can scientifically over come death.

This new space race is complicated. It does have the potential to bring about some massive change, especially with consumer technology. But it is also currently seen by many progressives as a ahem, part measuring contest between three rich white men who could be using the ungodly amount of money being poured into the program to approve things here on earth. I also think that Space X in particular isn't really doing the work to explain why this is a big deal. I had to go to reddit to find out the technological and economic implications of the catch.

Eh, I'll take it. There’s going to be advances made from the billionaires rocket measuring competition that will benefit others more than if they were competing over who has the bigger yacht.

It's interesting to me how anything SpaceX does is classified as "Elon Musk does X".
It's not really Elon Musk though, is it. It's his gigantic team of scientists who are doing literally ALL of the work.
Back in the day, we would say "NASA accomplishes X"...we would NEVER say the head of NASA and CERTAINLY not the president.

Now it's Musk,, he's getting all the credit.

Just a weird thing I notice.

I'd be really interested to know how much of their direction is from him as a visionary and how much is just from him as a piggy bank who stays out of the way. I've read comments (that at least seem to ring true) that, at least in the past, he was a pretty decent engineering manager, which I can believe. But that's hard to jive with some of his more recent actions. I wonder if he just takes SpaceX more seriously and respects the level of expertise required to get anything done, whereas with Twitter and, to a lesser extent, Tesla, he sees them more as playthings.
