Edification means literally "to build up" or "to make stronger." It comes from the same latin word as our word "edifice" which means a building, of course. :)

Yes.. I agree.

We are to build up or make strong spiritually. We are to learn more about Christ and GROW !!!

So, how do you know if you are edifying someone? Is it how you present the story to the other person? Does it depend on who the person is you are talking to (believer or non-believer)? I guess I am trying to figure out when you are saying to much and it crosses the line.

For example: I read this verse Matt 6:16-18 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

So, when someone does a fast it should be done in secret. But what if you had a really great fast and God worked with you all day and you just want to tell someone about it. Would that be crossing the line and disobeying Gods will?

Thanks for helping me on this ~~~ so confused.

The purpose of the Church, then, is to edify the believer; to build him/her up towards Christ-likeness. We are built up in the faith and that there is credibility in the gospel that we preach: that Jesus Christ indeed can change a life. From OLD nature to NEW nature.

The goal of that edification is to build up the Christians to proclaim the truth and act truly a christian seen by unbelievers. We are the light of the world. Scripture encourages all believers to edify the other members by practicing the “one-anothers” of the New Testament (e.g., Heb. 10:24–25). Scriptures states mutual edification can only take place in the church and this is one of the reasons we are to attend church. We are to go to church for worship and edification.

When the people you are working with become more loving, more Christlike, more genuinely filled with the Holy Spirit (and show the fruit of the Spirit), then you know you are being edifying. If they become more bitter, more resentful, more angry, more possessive and all the other fruits of association with the devil, then you will know you are not being edifying.

lamb are you saying that you can only know if you are edifying when you look back and see how things turn out?

That makes sense!

This is to be done only amongst christians? Which would make the fruit of edifying a brighter light? If you are shining then you can be a witness to a non-believer ?

So, we can't do this outside of the church? Has to be within the church and proclaimed to more then one person? Like doing a testimony?

God Bless!
