Hi Sappheire,

Welcome to the Oriental Orthodox Forum

We are virtually the same in terms of doctrine and beliefs except for three main differences:
1) The description of Jesus Christ humanity and Divinity.
2) The description of Original Sin
3) The sign of the Cross.

Before the 4th Century the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox were united but split after the 4th Century due to disagreement in terminology of the description of Jesus Christ humanity and Divinity in the 4th Council called Chalcedon in 459.

If you would like to read more about those differences and why we split, please refer to two threads below this thread, which I have brought up for you, called “OO vs EO” and “Sign of the Cross”.

i'm sorry but i find the title of this thread--Eastern vs. Oriental Orthodoxy heartbreaking. i believe that Orthodoxy is the TRUTH and represents the fullness of what Christianity--founded by our Lord, His Apostles, etc.--crafted it to be. These divisions--Eastern vs. Oriental or, closer to my experience, Russian vs. Greek, Serbian vs. Romanian, etc., etc., etc.--destroys the credibility of our witness to the TRUTH. Strive for unity, my brothers and sisters--"they will know we are Christians by our Love!":groupray:

MAY YOU ALL BE BLESSED AND MAY WE ALL BECOME ONE,

Hi ephraimanesti

Welcome to the Oriental Orthodox

Yes I agree with you whole heartedly that the title is heartbreaking. And would you believe that the title "OO vs EO" was made by an Eastern Orthodox? The person who is Eastern Orthodox in their title was asking a question, and this is the title he placed for us.

What is even more sad Ephraim, that there is so much animosity coming from the Eastern Orthodox Forum that it is breaking the Oriental Orthodox people's heart. We have nothing but respect for our Eastern Orthodox brothers, yet many will not acknowledge the Oriental Orthodox in respect.

So yes, it is important that we pray for our Eastern Orthodox brothers and sisters as well as the Oriental Orthodox that we may come in unity.

MY DEAR ORIENTAL ORTHODOX BROTHERS AND SISTERS,

i am new here--both here here and at CF--so i really don't know anything about the animosity referred to above by Erini, but if such there really is--may the Lord have mercy on us all! i guess i am naive, only having been blessed to be led to Orthodoxy about 5 years ago, but what in the world is this silliness about? For various reasons, after exploring within Orthodoxy for about a year, i came to prefer Russian Orthodox services--mainly because of the chanting and the kissing (pretty spiritual, huh?). However, i consider one of my greatest teachers in my formation as an Orthodox believer to be Father Matta El-Meskeen who is, of course Coptic. i also (obviously) have Saint Ephraim as my patron saint--he too is Coptic.
Orthodoxy is the truth--whether expounded by the Optima Elders or a Desert Father/Mother! i would love to learn more about Coptic beliefs and practices, and i feel sorry for those who are stuck in their little boxes playing "we've got the truth and you are heretics and going to hell" games with those who are, in God's eyes, their brothers and sisters in the Lord. There is only One who has all-TRUTH, and it ain't either one of us--Eastern or Oriental!
On behalf of my fellow Eastern Orthodox--may you and God forgive us for our pride, arrogance, spiritual dullness, and lack of love. May we all be one!!!!!

LORD HAVE MERCY, LORD HAVE MERCY, LORD HAVE MERCY!
