if your a christian and you dress like a goth, would that be wrong? i mean you dont have to act deppressed all the time or worship some false god or anything but just dress like them. i like their clothes (somtimes)i love baggy pants there SO comfortable but my parents dont care for it much, its not like im goin to go out and do a bunch of stupid stuff what would you do?

when im talking about baggy pants im mean the kind where you cant see your feet and are about to trip on them there so big!!! Im also not going to be a goth, for example, worship anything(other than the 1 true God  ),and im not going to go out and smoke pot anything, i just like their clothes. and the thing with peer pressure, i dont have any really cause im homeschooled and even if i wasnt that wouldent be why i like it.

I don't think there's a single thing that's wrong with it.

Explain to your parents that you aren't doing it to express rebellion, or to associate with a specific subculture, but merely because you like the style. Ask them what their specific concerns are.

If they really don't like it, though, I'd say that you should let it go until you're 18; it's probably not worth fighting over.

It is wrong to dress like a goth to be more goth like. That is falling into temtation.

But to dress in some goth styles because you like the styles isn't wrong. It is really just developing your own style. And it is imortant to develope you own sence of beng your own personality. So people can look at you and think your really confedent of yourself because you have God in your heart.

When it comes down to your mother. You can try to explane that to her but is she still disagrees respect that and follow her for awhile longer till you leave the out. The bible calls us to honor you mother and father that includes disagrements on style. (I now thats where I struggle)

The meaning behind being a goth is to worship death so much that you want to become almost dead your self. It also encourages us to live in darkness. God doesn't want that. In the bible it encourages us to be the light of the world. So when you dress goth like to be more gothic your telling your self and even others that you worship darkness and death. Do you trully want that?

PeggySue,

I don't know anything about goth so I can't really comment on whether it's right or wrong, but if you're a teenager, which it sounds like you are, then you need to respect your parent's wishes, even if you don't think they make sense.

Everybody wants to look like they're in style with everybody else but our first job is to honor God. Since God has placed your parents in authority over you, the best way to honor Him is to honor them by obeying.

Sit down with your mom and talk about it. I'm sure there are some cool looking, comfortable clothes you guys can compromise on that you would like and that she would approve of. Just remember that she has the last word and that she's only looking out for your best interests.

It's always a challenge to break away from the crowd and most just cannot stand up to pear pressure (I'm not sure that spelled it right). I only wish that I would have been a better example to my friends when I was young instead of following after shallow vain things such as clothing and style. So few take the high road and serve others or challenge their friends to go and minister kindness to the poor and lonely, or to feed the hungry and clothe the poor, as Jesus asks about when He returns. If you can, break away from the world's selfish ways and its system of materialism that dulls the spirit and causes us to ignore our true responsibilities in life, as it would be of great advantage to your spiritual growth and walk with God. This probably won't be received well, but I think I would have at least wanted to hear it once when I was growing up.

For this issue, it's wrong. Dressing Gothic is a style of the world. I encourage you as a Christian Brother (I am 12 so I know how Gothic people dress.) not to dress up like the world, but to set an example for everyone else around you. Like Jesus he led his people by examples he never told them "Do This and do that." he only told them what was wrong and right. To me don't dress up like a Gothic cause Gothic is what comes from witchcraft. Why do you think it's all black and have chains around them? So don't be like the world, be Holy! (Holy means practically different.)

God Bless You
Joel.

Even GOTHICS can't agree on what their title means. Under many of their definitions, I would be a goth. Under others, I don't even come close.

a young gothic culture does not come from witchcraft, or from evil, or even from depression. Perhaps a very young type does (as Soldier as alluded to) but in a more mature - more widespread form, Gothic culture/dress/music etc... is a newer version of the old philosophies. It's a call for self-control and a search for truth - as ANY human is drawn to.

Some groups, especially in elementary - into early high schools, dress as Goths to make a statement. It's a rebellion that makes heads turn - disgusts those that the students wish to disgust. This isn't wrong either, but it can be dangerous. I say, examine the friends and the culture you are being pulled into. Examine it's validity in light of Christ, and see whether it is truly for style, or for a non-Biblical reason like death worship (which I have NEVER seen in a gothic community in my years around Goths).

Near my house there is a messianic rabbi who preaches Christianity from a Christian perspective at a synagogue (quickly search for messianic Judesim if you don't understand). He does not believe that keeping kosher or following the strict Jewish laws is necessary for a saving faith. However he follows a traditional Jewish lifestyle simply so that he can hold credibility with orthodox Jews that he regularly congregates with.

Your reasons for dressing or acting in a way that is NOT required (or specified) by God should be similar. If you find yourself dressing Gothic to feel powerful - or popular, you should get out. In my experience, the Goths that you'd really want to be popular with are those who judge on views and intelligence MUCH before appearance. In my area, the Goths I hang out with couldn't care less what I look like. My ability to hold an intelligent conversation is much more important.

Just be yourself, and realize that while being yourself doesn't necessarily include a bit of Gothic culture, it doesn't necessarily exlude it either.

This is touchy because...

I have been a Christian for a while.. I wear a lot of black, a lot of 'rocker' type stuff, studded belts and bracelets... but that is just my style. That is like saying that if I wear baggy pants and urban clothing, I'm acting like a rapper. I wear clothes of all kinds.. rockerchick type things, preppy, tomboyish.. whatever Jai likes and feels comfortable in. I never wear revealing things because I always dress modestly (or try to anyway).

Face it - every style of clothing is reflective of SOME genre. There is no way of dressing like a Christian besides dressing modestly and respectively.

Your heart is what is important. People will judge you regardless. You have to let the Jesus in you shine, and be who God made you to be. Continue to seek Him in ALL areas of your life.

If you dress a certain way just because you like the style of clothing, that is OKAY. Be yourself!

But if you do it in attempts to emulate the culture.. if that is your intent, then THAT is when there is a problem!

Hope this helps!

You must make this decision. You got some good Godly advice here, but God must lead the decision. Listen carefully to "honor you father and mother". But you are free in Christ. All things are lawful, but not everything brings Glory to Jesus. Clothes tend to bring glory to us.

Sometimes these clothes are very effective to meet others where they are and have opportunity to minister to them. But, is this your motive.

In Christ

"For this issue, it's wrong. Dressing Gothic is a style of the world."

There is virtually no way you could dress that wouldn't be considered a style of the world.

"To me don't dress up like a Gothic cause Gothic is what comes from witchcraft. Why do you think it's all black and have chains around them? So don't be like the world, be Holy! (Holy means practically different.)"

It doesn't come from witchcrage. Black clothes with chains on them do not have anything to do with witchcraft. I'm a "goth" I guess. I don't know anyone who dresses the way I do. I don't like looking like everyone else. I don't enjoy most of the clothes at GAP and Aeropostle. A lot of my outfits are put together in unusual ways. I have a pair of baggy black pants with, yes, chains. And Safety pins. And other various metal items. I don't wear them because I'm a witch. I wear them because I like them. I don't care what anyone in this world thinks of me. The only opinion that matters to me is God's. I know he doesn't have a problem with the way I dress, and I know there is nothing wrong with the way I dress.

Talk to your parents. Explain to them that you enjoy the style, and the creativity that can come along with it.

It's nice to not worry about how I look. It gives me so much more freedom.

Is there anything wrong with wearing a suit and tie? Is there anything wrong with wearing polo shirts and loafers? It's all just a matter of personal tastes.

I grew up in the punk/gothic/industrial scene; I love the music and the fashion that goes along with it. For me it was always just a matter of personal tastes. Was I rebelling? Yes, I was rebelling against a corrupt, immoral system based on greed and lies. Now that I’m a bit older my wardrobe is more age appropriate, but I’m still rebelling against the system. The clothes were just cool and had nothing to do with rebellion.

As long as you’re not accessorizing with pentagrams or anything evil like that, then it's not disrespectful to God.
