Anyway the rosary I am talking about is actually my mom's from way back in the day of her youth. She quit using it (probably after she left Catholicism but then again - I can't be sure of that - and I may never know now) but somehow kept it amongst some of the things from her college/secondary school days when she went to Catholic school.

One evening when it was completely dark in my room I discovered that the rosary glowed in the dark. The beads and the crucifix were completely visible in a soft luminous way (well except for the chain links) in the pitch black room without any other source of light to aid it. I even went to the bathroom lol when it was nighttime outside, shut the hallway light that was under the bathroom door, and made sure the bathroom was completely dark so that I could not see anything. Same thing happened. Hard to explain sorta, HOW I discovered this but when I did discover this I was pretty surprised. Then I googled "glow in the dark rosaries" to discover that there really did exist these sort of things, because I was starting to suspect that it was made this way on purpose.

Yep. I got a huge old one from the 50's that I found. Its a great way to pray the rosary with lights off & laying in bed.

Put the rosary under a lighted lamp before bed & try it out.

It will glow super bright.

Pretty cool. :)

I'm sure it will glow too. That's cool:) I think the one my mom has is from the 50s or 60s max. It's hard to explain what color it is - like a "dirty" ivory. Not that it looks dirty - but you know what I mean - maybe.

Wow to kwl! Looks like it was meant for you to pray with it ladybug ;) See, our Blessed Mother made sure you had a glowing rosary, its like she is calling you to pray it with her. I consider that quite a blessing.
Yeah - I like it. :thumbsup:To be honest it kinda scared me slightly at FIRST...but then I thought maybe it glows in case some people get scared at night of certain evil things and it is sort of a "weapon" against demonic influences, and then I was ok.

Cant believe you just said that. I was going to add that as well in my comment but thought, "Na, she will just think I am going overboard". LOL. Can you imagine the face of our enemy when he sees a rosary glowing, at night right next to you as you sleep. Wow, the image I get is priceless. ^_^

Michie that's the exact color and almost exact crucifix (not identical though) to mine. I don't know about the size though but it probably is the same size, because the one shown here is not small, and neither is mine. The center piece there is not the same though.

yeah...at first it kind of creeped me out though sorry:sigh: but then I thought, how can a rosary creep me out...then I thought that maybe there was a purpose in it glowing, to protect you at night and then I felt ok.

Geeze, I thought my glowing in the dark Rosary was so I wouldn't loose it. I became a Catholic while in the military and said the Rosary in bed and would fall asleep. Getting up in the service in Basic is a real treat, I must say. Lol. Finding my Rosary was at times difficult till a friend gave me a glowing one. I never thought I could hurl it at any enemy spiritual or otherwise (at the time my Sarge was the enemy Lol).

I have improved for it has been ages that I say my Rosary in bed or use a glowing one at that. But they are neat. So no falling asleep anymore. And the Sarge and I went our separate ways. Anyhow's that all was some time ago. But I truly have thought that the glow was so I could find it under 10 sec. or so during my basic training.

Yeah - it's strange that I didn't mention phosphorus up until now. That's the thing that enables the glow.

It is not phosphorus that makes it glow, it is a phosphor, actually a transitional metal. Phosphorus is a chemical element. Phosphorus will emit light but it is chemiluminescence. Phosphors are responsible for phosphorescence and are used in glow in the dark items and CRTs.

I have made some (those particular beads and crosses can actually be purchased).

And I remember several years ago when one Bishop from Lima, Peru was on EWTN. He said that his people would put their Rosaries (which did glow in the dark) over their heads while they were riding their burros down the mountain (so they wouldn't lose them) and it was certainly a sight to behold with the glowing Rosaries.

I dont think they can be harmful, MariaRegina.

I believe i have had one - but it wasnt made so elaborately, and it was made of cheap beads.
[Kids rosary actually]

I am not sure where it would be now.
But i think it would be very awesome to have one again.

People certainly did use dangerous radioactive paints for various purposes at one time. If you have a very old gitd rosary with painted beads, I wouldn't lick it. If it's from the '50s I probably wouldn't worry about it - radiation was well-understood by then.
