Hi all, I've been reading the psalms today because the last week I lost my way with God and could no longer sense his presence. I tried fasting, praying, renouncing, announcing, meditating, listening to worship music and still I can't sense him, I feel spiritually dry.

some say that God withdraws his presence sometimes in response to sin or to remind us that we are dependant on him, Others say that God NEVER withdraws his presence from us but that when we feel far from God its because WE moved. Im not sure the latter has a strong biblical basis when you can see the psalmist asking God HOW LONG WILL YOU HIDE YOUR FACE FROM ME

so whats the truth? does God withdraw his presence?

I dont know, but i do know that we must wait on God in times like this. The Psalms say we must wait on God

I lost my way with God

You say right here in your first sentence that you "lost your way with God".

Please elaborate on what you mean by that.

Did "you" move or did "God"?

Thank you kindly.

I believe He is always there, it's just harder for us when we've pulled away ourselves. I was taught by my mother not to rely on feelings alone to be God, that we won't always "feel" the same when we're in His presence but it doesn't mean He isn't there. He wants us to continue to trust Him, to have faith and be connected with Him. I'd gone my own way & was disconnected for a long time, only recently re-establishing that connection and becoming stronger in my faith then before. I have been in constant prayer and reviewing the word, and setting aside "quiet times" during the day or at night to put on gospel music while praying. I've "felt" Him return as I hadn't felt Him in a long time, but I don't always "feel" Him, but I know in my heart He is still with me. I hope that makes some sense?

I'll pray for you that God gives you some sort of peace and clarity into your situation, and I suggest continued prayer and reading His word. He really moves in mighty ways when we make continued efforts to spend time with Him each day.

Question: "Will the Holy Spirit ever leave a believer?"

Answer:
Simply put, no, the Holy Spirit will never leave a true believer. This is revealed in many different passages in the New Testament. For example, Romans 8:9 tells us, “…if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.” This verse very clearly states that if someone does not have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, then that person is not saved. Therefore, if the Holy Spirit were to leave a believer, that person would have lost the saving relationship with Christ. Yet this is contrary to what the Bible teaches about the eternal security of Christians. Another verse that speaks to the permanence of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence in the life of believers is John 14:16. Here Jesus states that the Father will give another Helper “to be with you forever.”

The fact that the Holy Spirit will never leave a believer is also seen in Ephesians 1:13-14 where believers are said to be “sealed” with the Holy Spirit, “who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.” The picture of being sealed with the Spirit is one of ownership and possession. God has promised eternal life to all who believe in Christ, and as a guarantee that He will keep His promise, He has sent the Holy Spirit to indwell the believer until the day of redemption. Similar to making a down payment on a car or a house, God has provided all believers with a down payment on their future relationship with Him by sending the Holy Spirit to indwell them. The fact that all believers are sealed with the Spirit is also seen in 2 Corinthians 1:22 and Ephesians 4:30.

Prior to Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven, the Holy Spirit had a “come and go” relationship with people. The Holy Spirit indwelt King Saul, but then departed from him (1 Samuel 16:14). Instead, the Spirit came upon David (1 Samuel 16:13). After his adultery with Bathsheba, David feared that the Holy Spirit would be taken from him (Psalm 51:11). The Holy Spirit filled Bezalel to enable him to produce the items needed for the tabernacle (Exodus 31:2-5), but this is not described as a permanent relationship. All of this changed after Jesus’ ascension into heaven. Beginning on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit began permanently indwelling believers (Acts 2). The permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the fulfillment of God’s promise to always be with us and never forsake us.

While the Holy Spirit will never leave a believer, it is possible for our sin to “quench the Holy Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 5:19) or “grieve the Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 4:30). Sin always has consequences in our relationship with God. While our relationship with God is secure in Christ, unconfessed sin in our lives can hinder our fellowship with God and effectively quench the Holy Spirit’s working in our lives. That is why it is so important to confess our sins because God is “faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). So, while the Holy Spirit will never leave us, the benefits and joy of His presence can in fact depart from us.

None of this explains the laments of the psalmist

Sure it does. David sinned greatly, and in various ways.

He himself had distanced himself from God, especially because of un-confessed sin.

He was far far from God.

Repentance was in order BIG TIME.

It is written that a contrite and broken heart God will not despise.

As posted above, it is possible that our sin can quench the Holy Spirit and that we can grieve the Holy Spirit.

Not in the New Covenant and with a saved believer.

We must have faith and not be run by feeling or what we feel.

If your thinking you will always feel God’s presence than you are putting your faith in your feelings not putting your faith in God.

What did Jesus say? “I will never leave you or forsake you”.

that wasn't the question. I asked if God withdraws his presence, not wether the holy spirit ceases to dwell in us

God who cannot lie promised us He would never leave us or forsake us.
A little book I have found to be quite good is "The practice of the presence of God".
It is a compilation of letters written by Brother Lawrence, a 17th century monk, about practicing God's presence at all times.
It only costs a couple dollars on Amazon.

Triune God, Holy Spirit is God as well as the Son. NO He never leaves as Jesus sent the comforter which is the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit indwells a believer so God cannot leave you as stated above, He is Triune. The Holy Spirit is One of the Godhead. He intercedes for us.

Searching through the Bible for Scripture to verify a commonsense belief can be tedious. But I think common sense suggests that it is we that stray from the Lord, and not the other way around.

What is the difference?

God is the Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

So if the Holy Spirit dwells inside of you, God dwells inside of you.

If God indwells you, how could He withdraw from you?

He does somewhat remove the awareness of His presence, but not His presence. He is there, we just can’t feel Him and see Him as before, but that’s what brings us to maturity. It all depends on the season you are at the moment.

He never leave us nor forsake us.

I would add, you may disagree but I think that is more when we ‘tune out’ the Holy Spirit or no longer are as sensitive to being convicted of sin or His teaching

If the Holy Spirit lives inside of you, His DNA mixed with yours, and His promise never to leave or forsake you...How could He possibly withdraw His PRESENCE from you? Do not listen to the enemy.

When we withdraw from God, his light gets dimmer and can be hard to detect, especially because our discernment is weaker because we have withdrawn from God.

No, believers withdraw from the presence of God :( God doesn’t force his presence on us, we have to seek it…

we live in a world where even Christians seek joy in everything but God, and then wonder why they can’t feel his presence.

:)
