do catholic priests speak fluent latin? (i suposse im proddy/methodist, btw) its just cos im after a translation. its for a music project about people not singing songs you can sing along to, and it made me think of my grandad, who used to point out latin inscriptions on plaques and then tell me what they ment, he was well clever, but interesting with it. so i did the 2+2 sum and though sing a song about not understanding stuff in latin (but not as an attack, because it sounds so beautiful, mmm more like how my grandad used to learn me stuff by letting its own beauty shine. (i hope you know what i mean and can help me.) i understand if you cant its a trifling problem to some of the heart wrenching stuff you get on here, while im (drunkenly, i might add) wittering on, thank you for even reading these pages never mind trying to answer them. god bless you

Well, the reason they speak fluent Latin is because many of the Roman Catholic Church's early texts are primarily in Latin. Remember, in medieval times the mass used to be given solely in Latin. For awhile, the Bible was only available in Latin translations (until Martin Luther translated it into German). So the peasantry basically had no idea what was actually in the Bible, and the only ones who did were people educated in Latin: the clergy. The reason it was only in Latin has to do with some concept of thinking that Latin is the scholarly language, or something like that. Anyway, the reason Catholic priests might learn Latin today is so that they could better study their church's history and its catechism.

Heh, can't help you there. What do you want translated? My uncle is a Roman Catholic priest who is well-versed in French, Spanish and Latin, maybe I could ask him.

nobodys' singing songs that i can sing along to
ones where the words just roll across our tounge
nobodys' writting songs for the world to sing to
are there no experiances the saint and sinner share?
when you sing please let it be a song that you love
for its your spirit that lets the whole world sing

its that i want, i think :)
