The "temperament" thread reminded me of this. Heard a lecture on it not too long ago, was interesting. As with the temperaments, few of us are almost exclusively in one category, although many are "dominated" by one or the other, but many of us are much more of a mix......

ISTJs are often called inspectors. They have a keen sense of right and wrong, especially in their area of interest and/or responsibility. They are noted for devotion to duty. Punctuality is a watchword of the ISTJ. The secretary, clerk, or business(wo)man by whom others set their clocks is likely to be an ISTJ.

As do other Introverted Thinkers, ISTJs often give the initial impression of being aloof and perhaps somewhat cold. Effusive expression of emotional warmth is not something that ISTJs do without considerable energy loss.

ISTJs are most at home with "just the facts, Ma'am." They seem to perform at highest efficiency when employing a step-by-step approach. Once a new procedure has proven itself (i.e., has been shown "to work,") the ISTJ can be depended upon to carry it through, even at the expense of their own health.

ISTJs are easily frustrated by the inconsistencies of others, especially when the second parties don't keep their commitments. But they usually keep their feelings to themselves unless they are asked. And when asked, they don't mince words. Truth wins out over tact. The grim determination of the ISTJ vindicates itself in officiation of sports events, judiciary functions, or an other situation which requires making tough calls and sticking to them.

Their SJ orientation draws the ISTJ into the service of established institutions. Home, social clubs, government, schools, the military, churches -- these are the bastions of the SJ. "We've always done it this way" is often reason enough for many ISTJs. Threats to time-honored traditions or established organizations (e.g., a "run" on the bank) are the undoing of SJs, and are to be fought at all costs.

ENFP, for better or worse. I am dogged in the pursuit of whatever challenge I am focussed on and I am good at everything I do. I get bored easily and lose focus and have to find new challenges to interest me. I am a generally good leader but I am impatient with people and expect unrealistic things of them. If a project needs an expert in X, I don't understand why someone working on that project doesn't drop what he's doing and become an expert in X, because that is what I would do. I am not good at maintenance type tasks and I habitually neglect them. It is not unusual for my cars to go 15,000 miles between oil changes. Being my spouse is hard because I don't care to sit still and I am very aware of how I am spending my time - I do not want to watch a movie unless we're snowed in and there is literally nothing else to do. I am strongly extroverted and loyal, I make friends easily and I remain close friends today with virtually everyone I've ever been close friends with. I enjoy taking what look to some like large risks but am calculating enough that I don't get burned - I have what people call luck but it's really just my wierd brain running calculations and estimations. I need flexibility in all things - I don't punch a clock well, I need a job that will let me show up when I feel like it and work until I don't feel like it. I am told that I am a good leader because I am willing to go in the trenches and do the dirty work myself - it isn't unusual for me (I'm mostly a designer and project manager) to be found in the machine shop or at a welder fabricating something. I don't do that to demonstrate willingness though, I do it because I am incredibly inpatient and also very particlar. I do not tolerate imperfections well and I like to deliver things that exceed expectations. I am a harsh critic of myself and no matter how much praise I earn, I don't ever feel good about what I've done because I can always see the things that I could have done better. I always have 1000 things going on - home projects, vehicle restorations, jobs for friends and neighbors, volunteer stuff. I don't like to sit and Indon't like to sleep. As a parent I focus on cultivating honesty (because I value it) and dicipline (because I lack it naturally and I see it as a virtue). I don't have preferences for what activities my kids do but I insist that they be involved and work hard. I try to introduce them to everything, even things that I don't particularly like. Sports, music, theatre, art, competitions, hunting, fishing, you name it, I want them to be conversational and experienced in each because I know how much having that one or two things that really drive you can enrich your life and I want them to find those things. Being my spouse is a rather short straw to draw, as a partner I do a lot of good but I require a babysitter to do what I just don't - balancing the checkbook, cleaning, etc.
