Looks like they are Pentecostal:
beliefs | Church of God
"In 1896, many members of the Church of God experienced a spiritual outpouring they identified as the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Because it was so similar to the experience of the early Christians on the day of Pentecost, it came to be called a Pentecostal experience, an enrichment of the Christian life through the power of the Holy Spirit that empowered believers to be effective witnesses of Christ. The principle distinctive of the Church of God as a Pentecostal organization is its belief in speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance and that this is the initial evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit."

WHICH “Church of God???”

Cleveland TN (Pentecostal) and Anderson IN (cessationist) are the biggest; but there are at least a dozen more.

Those 2 are both rather Wesleyan in their doctrinal stance.

My wife’s home town (Lansing MI) has one called “The Original Church of God #2.”

Found one of these churches near my house, and upon reading the history it seems to be an offshoot of Baptist, but I find no real theological distinctions between the two:

Church of God
Some people find no difference, and that is fine.

Sometimes there is no difference, until after climbing the ladder so to speak, getting more and more into something, before there is any difference realized.

This could be true of many groups. The truth often is not found in the lower ranks, but is kept hidden , on purpose, for whatever purpose whether good or bad.

There are some denominations calling themselves CoG which are Pentecostals, and some who are not.

As an Eastern Christian and member of a pre-Reformation church, I would disagree with them.

I was raised an "Independent Missionary" Baptist. My ex-brother-in-law, was raised Church of God.

We both attended Baptist seminary.

Just a discussion between the two of us, the biggest difference that we found is two things.
  • OSAS
  • Speaking in tongues
And, just as every Baptist church does not adhere to OSAS, it depends on whether they are Arminian or Calvinist in theology.

I've been a Baptist for over 40 years, and even though we do not practice it, I have yet to hear one single church I've attended or been a member of, preach against "speaking in tongues". And even my brother-in-law agrees with me, that often, the CoG abuses that teaching.

God Bless

Till all are one.

My first "real" church experience was in the CoG (Cleveland). I was subsequently baptized there and stayed for many years. Like the Baptists, there's some leeway in their teaching, but for the most part a baptist would feel comfortable listening to a CoG sermon, I believe.

That said, there is a movement within the church that is pushing a more WoF viewpoint.
