Christian Big Band Music!!

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of Christian big band and swing type music, but I would sure like to find some. I've got a "Swing Praise" tape, a Pfeifers CD with some popular hymns in big band style, and a CD by Denver and the Mile High Orchestra. Can anyone point me to other Christian artists who perform music in this nature. Pretty much in the vein of Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, only Christian.

Try Duke Ellington 'The Sacred Concerts'. Its vocal but with Big Band backing.

I've been a little frustrated by the same thing... the lack of Christian big band music. Denver and the Mile High Orchestra is the only group I've found. There are a few secular groups that are very good and very popular right now, but don't have Christian lyrics.

The only thing I have come across is some stuff from Brentwood Jazz. Mostly out of print now though. They were a quartet though, and not along the lines you were thinking. I really liked them though.

Also search for Ralph Carmichael, one of contemporary Christian music's pioneers. He's got numerous big band CDs available. A couple of them are "Strike Up The Band" and "Ralph Carmichael and Friends Live".

Brentwood Jazz Orchestra ("Rock of Ages") and Chris McDonald Orchestra ("Big Band Hymns" and "Big Band Christmas") are two more. Both are distributed, I think, by Brentwood Music.

Also look for Jack Price's Gloryland Band. There are at least five volumes available. It is big band, but it's somewhat watered down to cater to the more traditional gospel music listener.

There are a few lesser known groups out there if you look on the web. Their names escape me now.

Believe it or not, my band director at my high school taught the dummer in Denver & the MHO. He pulled some strings and they played a couple selections at our school. All we had to do was fufill the rider, and the students volunteered to do that.
