I have felt led to fast many times, but never have because I smoke. :( It's not that I wouldn't be willing to give up cigarettes for a day. I just feel my fast would be useless if I lit up again right after the fast was over. Plus, going without food and cigarettes for a day or two? Eek. I don't think I have that much spiritual discipline.
I also thought about fasting in order TO QUIT smoking. Fasting is supposed to break bondages, right? I just don't know if I have enough faith to believe that God will do it.
Anyone struggle with this or have any advice?

I agree with you. I'm a smoker also, and one of the things that worries me is that I'm thinking I'd be smoking cigarettes during the fast.. now, I'd like to do a 3-day fast or something and take it from there. It's just, it feels weird if I'd be smoking during that time. I'm wondering wether I should be considering the fast a failure if I do smoke cigarettes during the fast..

I'd sure like to quit, and I'm willing to give it a try. If fasting helps people out on this, great! Any experiences with this anyone?

While I dont think smoking in proper moderation is sinful, becoming addicted to this disease causing habit is very bad for you. It is hard to depend on God when you have to depend on chemicals. Food can likewise become an addiction, which is one of the reasons we fast from it. Fasting does not have to mean a total fast, however. Quitting cold turkey may be the way for you, but gradually weaning from the cigarettes could be good for you as well. Perhaps, through this Lent, you could try to cut your use by half. That would be a great accomplishment, and it would make it even easier to decide to end this harmful habit once and for all!

I agree with Choirfriend... you can quit cold turkey or you can quit slowly through the cutting back of cigs. The latter is harder because it still fulfills your passions of smoking and can lead you back on the path that you do not desire. It is much safer to quit cold turkey and rely on the Lord rather than small puffs to quit while relying on the Lord. God be with you on this fast/decision. :)

My thoughts would be fast anyway.
If you feel led to fast obey.
If you fail there is always another fast.
That is the good thing about my God he cares and forgives and when we try that is very important.
Just be obedient and don't beat yourself up if you fail.
Just pick yourself up and go for it again.
I think I will do a juice fast tomorrow.
I don't smoke but I need to fast also.

Let me encourage you, please know that God will give you the faith you need to believe (none of us have enough faith by ourselves). Draw near to Him, He will draw near to you. Ask earnestly (with hopeful expectation) in prayer (I suggest you fall on your knees in long prayer, as long as it takes for you to feel the peace and joy that increased faith will bring.)

And don't worry about tomorrow or the next day, He will be with you every step, every day. I sense that you will experience a closer presence of God by relying on Him to build your faith.

Your sister in Christ,

I am a smoker (well sorta) I fasted many times from many different things... if the Lord is telling you to fast, fast. but it may not be from cigs, but if it is fast them, I did a forty day fast from cigs once but, i've done a 5 day fast from anything but water, and I smoked through it... it all depends on what the Lord wants you to do...

in matthew 9:14-17... jesus teaches about a new kind of fast,(the bridegroom fast, the new wine), a mourning for Jesus' presence, a mourning, or longing of the heart, a lovesickness... this fast is new and radical, because fasting was just a spiritual discipline and just that... a discipline, it was used as a religious crutch, somthing they used to say "here I am Lord, look at me, I have made myself worthy," that is the old wineskin... you can't be the one who makes yourself worthy, encountering Jesus and loving Him passionatly, unreservedly, self-sacrificaily, and knowing that it is only by his blood you are worthy, that is what makes you worthy

through fasting we encounter our Lord and Savior in a more intence way, it is Jesus who breaks down strongholds, not the act of fasting.

btw... Just today I started a 3-day fast and today I am also attempting to quite smoking, it is written that you are a slave to what has mastered you... and I want to be a slave to God almighty... please pray for me as the Lord leads you to..... thank you very very much.

may the grace, peace, and love of our Lord Christ Jesus be with you all

Hello all, I just wanted to give encouragement to the smokers. I just quit a few weeks ago and have felt the Lord working in my life like never before. Cigarettes were one of the "strongholds" that the devil had built in my life, and it felt so good to finally break the habit. I didn't wean off, but quit cold turkey and haven't turned back. I think once you really want to quit and will rely on God to help you, it makes it very easy. I haven't even experienced a craving! One thing that also helps if you're used to smoking in the car is to listen to a Christian radio station and really think about the lyrics and praise God that you're not poisoning your body with cigarettes anymore.
I agree so much with you. Before I was saved I smoked. I really wanted to quit, once I was born agian. It was very hard, but I made my mind up that I wanted to be closer to God, more than I wanted cigs. I quit cold turkey, too. When it got hard I prayed and He helped me. Smoking is a bondage and it defiles our temple. It is definitley a stronghold the enemy uses agianst us and to keep us from a more fulfilling relationship with Jesus and to hurt our witness. I really try to live a life of regular prayer and fasting and I must tell you that the closeness and the annointing that I feel is amazing! If I hadn't quit smoking I know itwouldn'tbethisway. If you decide to fast, ask God to help you quit smoking and He will, He helped me. He did deliver me from crystal meth, something I couldn't quit on my own,. So, I know that he can deliver you. He is willing and waiting to help you! God bless!
