What is the problem of pain??

that it is unreliable when it comes to serving God and actually should be expected (I presume)

"Try to exclude the possibility of suffering which the order of nature and the existence of free-wills involve, and you find that you have excluded life itself”

it's been awhile since I last read it

I have not read any of his works but I have heard that Mere Christianity is a real winner...

If I may recommend another author to you it would be Andrew Murray. Absolute Surrender and Humility are some of the best books I have ever read

I'd say the Chronicles of Narnia, but that's just personal bias — I grew up on them and still absolutely treasure them. ;) I haven't read Mere Christianity yet, but going by excerpts I've read from it, it's definitely on my (ever-lengthening) must-read list, as is his wartime sermon The Weight of Glory.

Apart from The Cosmic Trilogy and the Narnia series, which are both fiction but informative and entertaining, my favorite CS Lewis books (in order of favoritism) are:

Mere Christianity*
The Great Divorce*
The Screwtape Letters*

The Problem of Pain
The Pilgrim's Regress
Surprised by Joy

* these are definitely my favorites

Oh yes, forgot to mention The Screwtape Letters! I read it just recently and it is excellent — brilliantly written and very thought-provoking as well as darkly funny.

Hey! Really interested in finding his work now. I think I read the Great Divide years ago and if anyone has suggestions I'd appreciate it!

Blessings!

Mere Christianity, the Abolition of Man, and Screwtape Letters are all excellent and a number of them are posted online for free. There are also some great doodle videos on youtube:

Erm, just wondering how legal that is, considering his works are still under copyright. o_O

My reading experience with Lewis has been:

1) The Screwtape Letters (My favorite of his books)
2) Mere Christianity
3) God in the Dock, which is a collection of his essays dealing various issues of belief.
4) Surprised By Joy (or at least a few chapters of it anyway...)

Peace,

Everyone seems to be in accordance with Screwtape Letters. Odd title, but that's where I'll begin!

Just make sure you don't spoil the last few chapters (letters) by looking at them early...

C.S. Lewis is may favourite author. If you liked The Great Divorce you'll likely enjoy the rest of his fiction. The next closest in style and content are probably The Srewtape Letters and his space trilogy (Perelandra, Out of the Silent Planet, and That Hideous Strength). The seven book series of the Chronicles of Narnia is probably best purchased as a box set, and while often considered for a younger audience is actually pretty deep with layers of meaning. My favourite of his fiction was also his favourite, Till We Have Faces, a re-appropriation of the myth of Cupid and Psyche, and a bit more for an adult audience, with more obscure Christian overlays.

But yeah, one really shouldn't miss his non-fiction works, and for a bit of a mix it's best to go ahead and spring for something like The Complete C. S. Lewis Signature Classics (containing in one volume Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, The Problem of Pain, Miracles, A Grief Observed, & The Abolition of Man).
