Burning smell in my sleep--what could it mean?

Hi all,

I'm just curious about something. Last night, I had a very heavy heart, and I asked God to make Himself known to me in some way ASAP, through a dream, etc. I really, really needed Him. Anyway, in the middle of the night, I woke up because I was smelling an intense burning smell. I can't really describe it...kind of like a campfire, I guess, but not quite. Anyway, I woke up because I thought the house was on fire. I tried to wake up my husband to tell him that we had a fire. Then I realized that there was no more burning smell, and that it had to have happened in my sleep. I do not remember having any dream about anything burning.

Anyone have any thoughts here? Could this have been from the Lord? I do not believe I have ever smelled anything in my sleep before, so I am a bit confused. I do not want to think this is of God if it isn't, but I don't want to miss out on something if it is.

Thanks all!

Pam

I think it means some things may be burned away in your life. Why the heavy heart? Is there something in your life God is speaking to you about? Perhaps you feel He isn't doing something, and He is showing you He is.

Every word you just spoke is so very true! Yes, there is much that God is speaking to me about and much that I am speaking to Him about...mainly that I am desiring a deeper relationship with Him and that I have much to work on with regards to myself. I want so much to operate in the fullness of my calling and I can see His hand at work in my life, so I know that things are progressing, but sometimes I get impatient and wonder if I'll ever get there and worry that He isn't doing what I know He said He will do.

Interestingly, the smell, I believe, was more like a campfire smell, rather than an incense smell, although I could be wrong since I was half-asleep. But that would fit with what you were saying.

Thank you so much! I will continue in prayer about this. Since this has never, ever happened to me before, and coupled with the fact that I have been earnestly seeking Him, I just think there has to be a spiritual lesson here for me.

Blessings!

Pam

Sis, where do you live, and what is "intense?" To me, an "intense burning smell" isn't so much of a smell, as it is a burning in the nostrils due to smoke.

Sorry, what I meant was that it was very real to me at the time. It did not burn in my nostrils or anything like that, but I believed it to be real, until I woke up and realized that there was nothing burning. I know there was nothing burning in the house or anything like that.

Thanks!

Ok. And don't be sorry...it's just a slight difference in terms. So, do you live in urban, rural, or suburban? And did you continue to smell it after you awoke?

I live in a suburban area and no, the smell was not there after I woke up. I only smelled it while I was asleep.

Thanks!

I've been through the same thing, Pam..

I had control issues.. (still have sometimes - but God's working on me.. :) )

God had to show me that it is HIS TIMING and HIS WAY, not mine.. He woke me twice on a Saturday night saying "take up your cross & follow me.." and Sunday morning when I opened E-sword Matthew 16:24 was the "random" verse that day..

He wanted me to give up control.. to Him.. and my walk with Him has gotten so much closer.. I had to say I can't do this on my own.. But I know YOU can Lord..

Let's see...there's another question. Did you dream anything?

And here's a little test. Shove your nose into your sheets and inhale. Then shove your nose into your pillow and inhale. Shove your nose into your husband and inhale. Do you sleep by a window?

And no matter what, was the Holy Spirit speaking to you while you smelled this? I think that would be the best test for you--because His sheep know His voice. Samuel heard the voice of Yahweh and thought it was something else, but at that time was Samuel a Spirit-filled believer? Actually, that question is worthy of a thread for itself.

If you don't know that He was speaking to you, then there are all kinds of things you must consider before you go pinning God's voice on an odor, beyond a shadow of a doubt. It's not out of the question, but it's not automatic. Unless God says it is. It's not just because you could end up spiratically thinking that God said something that He didn't say, but because you could miss what He actually did say. The same things apply, of course, to ignoring Him when you know that he did speak to you in this language. I say the most important thing to do is pray.

Hi!

Well, I was sleeping on my back at the time, so my nose was not in my pillow or near my husband at all. And it was clearly a burning of something smell. We never sleep with the windows open, either. Plus, once I woke up, the smell was gone--it was not an actual, physical realm smell. And I was not dreaming about anything burning at the time, at least not that I remember. You had a good question about what was I thinking when it happened and as soon as I realized that the burning wasn't real, I just knew it was from God. I even said that to myself and told myself I would pray about it later to find out the meaning behind it. But that was the first thing that came to my mind--that it was definitely from God. Now, of course, I didn't want to be in danger of thinking something that wasn't true, so I just wanted to see what some other people thought about it, but honestly, I am quite certain that it was from Him and that I have the proper understanding of it. I have been praying about it all day and I am so in awe of our Lord!

Thanks so much for helping!!

Pam

I'm not being cynical, so please don't take it as such, but it very well may be prudent to inspect the cords and plug ins and such to all the appliances in the bedroom. Just in case.

Thank you very much for your concern, but this smell was not a real smell from this realm. I only smelled it in my spirit when I was sleeping. There was no smell once I woke up and I have not smelled anything since the second I woke up. Nothing is burning in real life or anything like that.

Thanks so much!

I will give you a witness for this. I read the thread and immediatly felt God was saying something. I think people here know me well enough to say that I don't go around looking for things under every rock. :)

When I read your post where you told me about how God may be burning things out and that He is working when I think He isn't--the words leapt in my spirit and I KNEW they were from the Lord and that you had the right interpretation. I was like "Aha!!! That's it!" Thank you so much for being obedient!!
