I was just thinking about how loosely I use the term 'blessing' and haven't ever really thought about what it exactly means. Jesus illustrated blessing as an action.

Mark 10:16
And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them.

Today I read a wonderful description of blessing-- "There's something about Godliness that enables you to release blessing to other people. That blessing is not a cute phrase to keep them emotionally inspired for a few days. It's the transmitting, it's the imparting of the substance of another world into that life to change or empower a divine destiny."

What an amazing thought! That God would use us as a conduit of His power to release blessings upon people....just as Jesus did to the children. How do you use this word? Is it a word of power or just an eight-letter word? :)

Great thread!! I've been thinking about this for some time....now I still don't have an answer (I'm a bit slow with these things!! LOL)....but I am looking forward to reading what people come up with.

I do think blessing is all about the power of God and not just a feeling or emotion or worst of all an empty phrase.

When some people say they are "blessed", it comes across with such pride. God opposes the proud. He said to me...it is better to be lessed than blessed! So since some may equate blessings with material prosperity, thought this Amplified perspective would be enlightening...beeeeeeeeeee truly blessed as you read! :D

Matthew 5:3-12 Blessed (happy, to be envied, and spiritually prosperous--with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the poor in spirit (the humble, who rate themselves insignificant), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven! Blessed and enviably happy [with a happiness produced by the experience of God's favor and especially conditioned by the revelation of His matchless grace] are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted! Blessed (happy, blithesome, joyous, spiritually prosperous--with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the meek (the mild, patient, long-suffering), for they shall inherit the earth! Blessed and fortunate and happy and spiritually prosperous (in that state in which the born-again child of God enjoys His favor and salvation) are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God), for they shall be completely satisfied! Blessed (happy, to be envied, and spiritually prosperous--with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy! Blessed (happy, enviably fortunate, and spiritually prosperous--possessing the happiness produced by the experience of God's favor and especially conditioned by the revelation of His grace, regardless of their outward conditions) are the pure in heart, for they shall see God! Blessed (enjoying enviable happiness, spiritually prosperous--with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of their outward conditions) are the makers and maintainers of peace, for they shall be called the sons of God! Blessed and happy and enviably fortunate and spiritually prosperous (in the state in which the born-again child of God enjoys and finds satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of his outward conditions) are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake (for being and doing right), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven! Blessed (happy, to be envied, and spiritually prosperous--with life-joy and satisfaction in God's favor and salvation, regardless of your outward conditions) are you when people revile you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things against you falsely on My account. Be glad and supremely joyful, for your reward in heaven is great (strong and intense), for in this same way people persecuted the prophets who were before you. [II Chron. 36:16.]

Hisgirl, you obviously missed the principle I was sharing...the difference between a prideful material 'blessed' versus one truly blessed because of their close relationship with God, even despite their trying circumstances.

Your reply actually sounds condescending, so may you be 'lessed'. :D

John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

Don't mean to be..just messing with you HB :) ....when I think of the term 'blessed', thinking of material things never enters my mind..I'm referring to however God wants to bestow His overflowing goodness on someone. It might be contentment, joy, peace...hey, it might be a friend dropping off a box of doughnuts....However He wants to show His love... I just wanted to talk about what the term means is all. NOW...may God bless your socks off today! ;)

Ooh, donuts - someone mentioned donuts!

Warm ones, with that gooey, sticky icing on top? :yum:

Now that's a material blessing! ^_^

God bless you, (yes, I may use the phrase a lot, but not thoughtlessly, I do mean it... :) )
love Sue

Ah yes, that's the one - how could I have forgotten the name?!

And to think, I restircted myself to just two when I could have had a box full - and I can't get them over here!!! :o

Hisgirl thanks, and be blessed extravagantly, ( either in Krispy Kreme or whatever. )

HumbleBee I respectfully have to disagree with you - I think if God had thought it better to be lessed than blessed he would have made sure that is what the Bible said. It doesn't however say that at all - it says over and over again that our God is one who delights in blessing his children.

I agree that blessings will always be primarily spiritual - but you can not ignore the fact that God so often in the Bible sees fit to bless people in physical and material ways too. To ignore this in my own life would seem ungrateful - so when I say I am blessed I declare the goodness of God and what he has done for me, based not on who I am but on his very nature - which is to give. I do not think this is pride, in fact it would be pride to not declare it and assume that the good in my life came from any other source than God. Without him I am nothing - but with him nothing is impossible.

Well, that is my opinion, you are of course free to disagree, but I hope you can understand where I am coming from.
