"It is better for a man to have a beard than to not have one.

He who has a beard should not think less of him who does not, and vice-versa."

(kind of a contradiction? :p)

"How womanly it is for one who is a man to comb himself and shave himself for the sake of fine effect, and to arrange his hair at a mirror, shave his cheeks, pluck hairs out of them, and smooth them! For God wished women to be smooth and to rejoice in their locks alone, growing spontaneously, as a horse in his mane. But He has adorned man, like the lions, with a beard, a sign of strength and rule."

"For it is not lawful to pluck out the beard, man's natural and noble ornament. "A youth with his first beard: for with this, youth is most graceful." By and by he is anointed, delighting in the beard "on which descended" the prophetic, "ointment" with which Aaron was honoured. And it becomes him who is rightly trained, on whom peace has pitched its tent, to preserve peace also with his hair."

"But the hair on the chin is not to be disturbed, as it gives no trouble, and lends to the face dignity and paternal terror."
St. Clement of Alexandria, The Instructor: Book III, AD 195

--

I personally can't grow much of a beard yet, but I've got a good goatee going. I guess that fits in line with the last sentence of St. Clement's piece there. :p

--

"You, young men, honor those with beards. And if there is a man of thirty with a beard and one of fifty, or sixty, or a hundred who shaves, place the one with the beard above the one who shaves, in Church as well as at the table. On the other hand, I don't say that a beard will get you to heaven, but good works will. And your dress should be modest, as well as your food and your drink. Your whole conduct should be Christian so that you will be a good example for others"
St. Kosmas Aitolos, 1700's AD

It is a tradition that I personally find stongly appealing and I fully understand the reasoning behind it. I couldn't grow much of a beard until I was in my 30s, no problem now though. See the following link for a great photo of our priests cool beard!
My godson's is almost identical as well. He's a Fr. John wannabe!:)

Well, my priest is a great guy, but for some reason he is clean shaven. I actually wish he had a beard because I like the more traditional "priestly" look (like Eusebios' priest). I can't really understand why he doesn't have one. He grew a goatee during Lent, but then shaved it off for Pascha.

He's the type of guy who has a baby-faced look, so he looks like he's in his 20's but I think he's actually in his late 30's or early 40's. He would probably have a more mature/authoritative look with a beard.

I think his beard is awesome. It will get like that after 11 years of no bathing though. I just can't imagine how he went for 11 years without bathing. If I go for a day without one I feel dirty.

Eusebios,
Your priest does have a most excellent beard. I would say it is good enough to even make champion beard grower Fr. Vasily Vasilievich proud!

Beards on saints make icons much easier to write, if you ask me, because the beard is always easier to paint than skin. Plus, they just plain look good on icons of bishops and priests. Not that this would matter to most people :) (OK, I admit I am an ICON GEEK).

I had no clue he didn't wash? Any idea why he did that?

Ultra-asceticism. I have read that is one of the issues surrounding various hesitations to glorify him further.

I have also read that he visited his mother once a year (?) to take a shower.
Interesting stuff. I know he would visit his Mother once a year, but that's all I know.

From:

The Ascetic Life of Fr. Seraphim Rose
By Fr. Alexey Young

Fr. Seraphim took a "sponge bath" at a basin in his cell from time to time, but always took a thorough shower once a year, just before his annual visit to his mother. He never smelled and never looked unclean or dirty. As far as keeping "healthy" in any other ways, I was aware that he took a daily multi-vitamin, only out of obedience, but otherwise he had no interest whatever in health matters. I once asked him if he or the monastery had health insurance. He pointed up with his index finger and said (indicating heaven), "THAT is my 'health insurance'."

But then...

THE LAST TRUE REBELLION
The Radical, Catacomb teaching of Monk Seraphim Rose

by Monk Damascene Christensen

Then one day Fr. Seraphim came to the campus where I was going to school. He drove up in an old beat-up pickup truck, and emerged with his worn-out black robe, his long hair, and his exceedingly long gray beard which had become matted (I found out later that he had not taken a bath or shower since becoming a monk ll years before--which is common monastic practice in Israel, Greece, and Egypt--but for some reason he didn't smell). It was the image of absolute poverty.

I mean't to take a photo to post beforehand but never seemed to get around to it (laziness) so I finally trimmed about 5cm off my beard yesterday as far too many people were mistaking me for a priest ;)

Hmmm, if he didn't bathe but also didn't stink, I'd say that's a miracle! Based on the condition of his matted beard, I kind of wondered if there were any critters living in it. Well, if there was, I'm sure they were blessed critters to be living on such a holy man.....;)

I really like the whole beard thing with priests. it indeed does make them priestly and authoritative. it is also a way of knowing that a priest is orthodox, that is one of our traditions. I think we should all make our priests regrow full beards if they dont have them already, it is a very important orthodox tradition which we cannot lose. modernising is losing our religion past and heritage.

If I can recall, hieromonks are not allowed to cut their beards, They must grow them, and regular priests are allowed to trim them but are still told to wear them. The only exception is with some greek priests, who shaved out of tribute to the priests in turkey who are forced to shave by the turkish government.
