Can we or can we not listen to them? They are Metal band.

They got their name from the bible presumably "If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold"

I haven't listened to them in a long while. I stopped listening to them because some of their lyrics are obviously not of God like the lyrics from nightmare to name a few. "Dragged you down below, down to the devil's show" And Shepherd of fire is about Satan, "God hates us"

Today I got the random craving to listen to them again.

I listened to Afterlife and So far away (ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS ABOUT THEIR CHILDHOOD FRIEND THAT DIED) and was reminded how much I love a LOT of their songs. A few of their songs do not have harmful lyrics BUT "you shall know them by their fruit"

They are friends with satanists, one the lead guitarists has 6661 on his guitar, they love lots of fire in their shows and they do not believe in God.

Even if some of their lyrics are SEEMINGLY harmless, I should not listen, isn't it?

Someone, give it to me straight.

From Mark 7: "He summoned the crowd again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile.”

I don't think we should judge whether music is holy based on genre; there's a lot of solidly Christian lyrics from metal bands, even unexpected ones (Black Sabbath's Lord of this World & After Forever are great examples!). I don't know much about Avenged Sevenfold in particular, but censoring your music can be a slippery slope. If you truly think cutting out this music will lead you closer to God, do it, but I don't think it's a sin issue unless you let it become one. I'm so used to listening to "impure" music that it doesn't do anything to me. I've come to see it as an opportunity for prayer; you hear something not Godly, pray for those who said it & those who listen to it. God is stronger! Prayer will win every spiritual battle, because it allies you with the victor!

From James 4: "So submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

This is how I get through things that would lead people of weak faith farther from God; pray. One of my favorite TV shows is Firefly. It's controversial to say this on a Christian forum, because one of the main characters is a prostitute. But by watching it prayerfully, calling to God whenever she comes on screen, I've become much more adapt at seeing the dignity in every person (which is the heart of Catholic social teaching!). Prayer breaks through the distortions of this world; the show threatens to show her as an object, if you don't pay much attention, but much of the show displays her as someone who truly cares about others! Look for God everywhere; He is all good, He is the creator of all things, and He is everywhere--find Him!

Depending on where you go in life, this will be a crucial skill to learn. A friend of mine spent a summer in Thailand, studying & working against human trafficking. She spent times counting prostitutes & talking with some of them in brothels. One of the people she was with was a devout Christian, who was always pointing out God in the worst of these situations; they're sitting in a house of prostitution, filled with women who were kidnapped & forced in prostitution & pornography, being bought by members of the Russian mafia, and this Christian women is pointing out the love the prostitute's mothers have for them!

May God bless us all & all that we listen to!

It seems many recognize they not only do not "seem" harmless, rather they do cause much harm. (to little ones especially; and those week in faith, or not in faith)

So no, do not let it be heard.

I've found that the types of music I am currently drawn to shows the condition of my heart. I do not believe that listening to "bad" music makes you sinful. I believe it's my sin that makes me love bad music. As I have grown in Jesus Christ, my tastes/desire for music have changed from Rock and Rap like AC/DC and Snoop Dogg to worship and praise. I still enjoy EDM/House and dance music, catchy beats, smooth rythm and harmonies, and deep lyrics of all types of music. But more and more I love certain worship music more. My spirit is edified by it. The other stuff just appeals to my sinful flesh.

You're not going to get a straight answer. The question of whether or not it's OK to listen to certain music attracts opinions from either side. So it does seem to come down to a personal conviction.

I take secular music on a song by song basis. If the song's lyrics are good and if there's no occult connection, I think it's fine to listen to. If the song's lyrics are anti-Christian, skip it. Metal is just a genre of music, nothing inherently bad about it.
