He redeemed us when He took our place for us.

However, the gospels weren't written until after Jesus had lived, preached, and performed miracles, died, risen and ascended. They are related to the Old Testament in that their topic is Jesus, to Whom the prophets, and the types and shadows of the Old Testament point. That's why we see Matthew, Mark, Luke and John quote the Old Testament so often. For instance:

Jesus asserted that he gave a new commandment: to love God above all things and to love your neighbor as yourself; these two commandments form the basis of the entire law. One of the questions that arises is whether tithing is related solely to this ministry of Jesus as reported in the Gospels, while the ministry of the Spirit had not yet arrived (1 Corinthians 12:5)

The Torah was the code of civil, criminal, and regulatory laws for Jews and also for circumcised Gentiles living in Judea. As we know, Jesus did not come to abolish the law and the prophets, and what Jesus taught applies to citizens of other countries who are subject to different types of codes of criminal, civil, etc., laws.
