Lately I've really gotten into ambient/drone music like Hammock, Stars of the Lid, Windy & Carl, ect. Just this past year I've really evolved musically. Starting with metal bands in December/January-ish, then indie stuff like Death Cab and what-not, then on to Post Rock/Instrumental stuff, which I still love, then to ambient. So progressively my musical interest has gotten more peaceful, less chaotic, with each step, until i've reached that pure, center essence of music, which I find is ambient. Personally, it brings out a lot more of an emotional response than most music I've listened to. It's a slower process, less rushed type of music. I just find it amazing on a bunch of different levels. Anybody agree, or like ambient?

I like ambient music too though I'm not much of a purist with it. Some of Adrian Ross' work has some good (Aboriginal didgeredoo player who combines it with western music) ambient stuff as well as some of the songs in John Frusciante's "To Record Only Water For Ten Days".

entirely too much love for Hammock... i jsut recently found out that both Marc and Andrew are both Christian. if you listen to their music with THAT in mind, it becomes entirely too obvious what they are doing. the beauty is sooo overwhelming, have you seen the video for Mono No Aware that they have on the front page of their site? sorry for bringing up a dead thread, dunno wut the policies on that are around here

I never listen to ambient music and never even really knew what it is. Metal is generally it but after looking up Hammock just now, I have to say, I'm a fan. Dang this stuff is peaceful. I could go to sleep to this and never wake up. The whole thing just paints stuff in your mind and totally relaxes you. Good stuff... Obviously something I have to be in the mood for to really enjoy (like now... It's late. I'm bored. Not really sleepy but exhausted... perfect mood for this kind of music)

*sigh* I'm gonna turn this light out and keep listening for a bit.. this is nice...

ahhh yes, embrace the ambient, let it wash over you!!

metal fan eh? check out the band Rosetta, they do a sort of very epic metal with lush spacey ambient stuff going on in the background... if you like them, PM me and i can turn you on to LOTS of post-metal bands.

I do enjoy some ambient music on occasion although I still prefer it to have some semblance of structure and melody. My favorite ambient album would have to be Brian Eno's Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks from 1983. Other ambientesque stuff I enjoy are BT - This Binary Universe, Ulrich Schnauss, Carbon Lifeforms - World of Sleepers, and The electronic tracks from David Bowie's Berlin Trilogy.

o yeah man! Ulrich Schnauss is awesome, although i would consider him more electronic shoegaze than just straight ambient. and of course you gotta have love for Eno, he basically invented the whole genre. yeah i cant do stuff that has no melody or structure, i like it to be subtly structured and usually building to a brain melting climax of beauty. if u like Schnauss you should check out the album "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts" by M83

ok ambient fans, Hammock has posted their new video for the first new song from the upcoming album. it is BEAUTIFUL, easily the most heartstring pulling video i have EVER seen. go to their site hammockmusic dot com (sorry it wont let me post links yet ) and BLISS out. this video is SO powerful, and if you keep in mind that they are Christian while watching it, its even better!!

I'm an ambient fan and have made a couple tracks as well. Electron7 produces some Christian ambient music that is geared for worship. His stuff is free to download on Jamendo. I'm actually starting a net-label, and we'll be hosting his stuff as well.

Very into ambient, drone, and related experimental musics as both listener and musician. Some older and newer favorites: Robert Rich, Tuu, Pulse Emitter, Eliane Radigue, Rapoon, Jason Kahn, Terra Ambient, Ellen Fullman, early 70s Kosmische musik (Popol Vuh, Ohr-era Tangerine Dream, Cluster, etc.) Post-rock, space rock and psybient/downtempo electronica have some lovely offerings as well.

I like Riceboy Sleeps, but they aren't one of the artists I frequent as much. Jonsi is a phenomenal artist though! And I've only heard mention of Nctalgia. He's pretty recent, right? Like he presents a lot of his music through YouTube and MySpace I think? I may be wrong?
