Any good movies that represent the Orthodox Church well?

Just looking for something to rent that might be entertaining as well as something I could learn about the Orthodox Church from. Thanks.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding???




I am told that Orthodox (cradle that is) can't stand the movie, Zorba the Greek. I dunno! I am told they loved the Big Fat Greek Wedding film

IANACO , but I didn't care for the 'Orthodox' parts of MBFGW. Especially the 'annointing' scene. It is a funny movie though

Although MBFGW is uproariously funny and is a favorite amongst Greek Americans for it's portrayal of the culture, I personally believe it does little or nothing in terms of educating one on the Orthodox faith, nor does it, IMHO, paint it in a very favorable light.Neither does Zorba the Greek, nor the other two films in which the Orthodox Church makes cameo's, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Deer Hunter.
Just my 2 cents worth.

How about "Eleni" (spelling may be slightly off)? Made in about 1990, it portrayed life in Greece during the civil war after World War II. It was very moving.

The Deer Hunter

The Deer Hunter, parts of it were filmed inside of St Theodosius Cathedral in Cleveland, OH. The priest in the movie was a real priest as well. The movie is very good although gruesome, definitely R rated.

I wouldn't trust Hollywood to accurately portray Vacation Bible School, much less Orthodoxy.

I concur completely with Ufonium on this one. My understanding about the Deer Hunter is that the Church regretted having granted permission to use St. Theodosius after the film crew decided it was ok to "light up" in the nave.

The Peacemaker (with George Clooney and Nicole Kidman) opens with a baptism in a Serbian Orthodox Church.

Also, Catherine the Great (1995, a TV movie starring Cathering Zeta-Jones).

Rasputin, (1996, starring Alan Rickman and Ian McKellen, respectively as Rasputin and Tzar Nicholas II)

Nicholas and Alexandra (1971, directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, same director of Patton and Planet of the Apes. Very good movie.)
