You might consider that a lot of the gifts a priest will get in his career will be books or cd's about the Faith. Even for someone who loves books, something different might be a nice change. How about something like a bit of a more luxurious razor... some nice gloves to protect his hands for yard work... a beautiful pen... just one of lifes little luxuries that godly people often never would buy for themselves...

Hmm,... I don't know! This priest is a coutry pastor (think St. John Vianney). My SD is totally Roman and formal and woul LOOOVVVEE a pocket watch or Irirsh Llinen handkerchiefs or somethning like that. But this priest is of more plebian tastes.

- how about some REALLY good chocolate...

- A few bottles of a very good beer (or wine)

- organise a diner party in his honour with lots of good food (many priests LOVE to be invited to families for just an evening of relaxing. They do remain human.)

- At the celebration of 35 years of priesthood of our priest, members of the parish 'stole' the keys to the rectory (is that the right word) on a day when they knew he was gone and did a big cleaning/ painting/ buffing up thing. (only doable if you are like brothers and sisters to the priest, else he might be a bit embarrassed)

- a 'for a free evening' package. Find a basket and fill it with: a nice dvd (or dvd rental coupon), a bottle of wine (or beer, or soda), a bag of crisps, a little cardboard sign that says 'If it's not an emergency: I'm off tonight' (he probably won't use it, but he may have a laugh about it.), some hot coco mix, some chocolate and a little book of 'how to... have an evening off'... insert some drawings of your children..

- if he likes gardening: a good pair of pruning sheers

- a beautiful envelope with coupons for 'homecooked meals' (either frozen, or to be consumed at your place.)

- Are there things he enjoys? Our priest used to be a dedicated walker/ nature/ mountain lover. A good pair of walking boots was once purchased by three families together, or a backpack.

- for a country priest: one of those nice leather crosses...

((I could go on endlessly))

Age- late 30's, early 40's-- doesn't drink--has an extensive record collection (has a thing about records being superior to CD's)--no computer, no TV...on his days off goes to take care of his parents-- admits to wanting to learn Latin pronunciation, better-- as he attends the TLM when he is at his parents house---does cut the grass at the parish, but with a big industrial lawn mower (there are several acres)....

You're great at this-- I remember you having awesome Christmas gift ideas!!!

Mmm...

still... a decent second hand bike for in parish traveling, often can be found very cheap at police sales, or on flea markets and there just IS something about a priest on a bike. Though, should he be a priest that wears the casock, do remember not to buy a bike with one of those bars for the guys.

- For in the car, if he has a casette player: a collection of recordings from his own record collection.

- A cross stitched hanging for on his rear view mirror with the name of the parish on it, or a saint he is especially close to, or a saying.

- the letter collection: many people will admire your priest. Go around the houses of families that you know that like him. Ask each of the members of the family to write a letter about why they like him, how he helps them in their spiritual lives, etc. Then find a way to atractively package all letters. This has the threefold purpose of giving him something nice, creating community spirit, and emphasising how good a shephard he is. (this can also be done in adition to other gifts).

- I know I'm often comming back to food, but... a collection of really nice things to eat, like jams, olive pastes, fresh pesto, special cookies, etc. These are the things that don't need to be forever dusted, that you don't feel guilty over for 'not having any time for it', etc.

I really like that idea!

Why can't I have some big impressive title like 'defender of the faith'... 'senior apologist'... 'Vatican emissary'... ;)
because we are all made with unique gifts and talents only we can do!

defender of the faith- wouldn't be able to tell me what kind of bike to get a cassock-wearing priest!

You could go for something practical, like an extra set of shoes, or a gift card to pick the ones he's comfortable with.
Does he have a kneeler where he resides(rectory)maybe you could get someone from the parish to help make one for him?
I am always thinking of uber-practical gifts! (Like gas cards and stuff) But I have never thought of shoes! That's wonderful!
