Hey everyone, any of you recommend good books about singlehood? By "good" I mean something realistic, that recognizes the emotional, spiritual and physical aspects of being single, maybe having some reference too to being a never married single parent. While I appreciate all the talk about being happy being single for all the "holy reasons," I'm looking for a good book that goes deeper than that (not trying to minimize the spiritual, but I'm just trying to avoid a possible legalistic, cut-and-dry tone in a book). And by "deeper" I mean like maybe sections that understand the difficulty of just being patient (and not just saying, "keep yourself busy" but also recognizes the complexities of waiting - ie. I can keep myself busy but it doesn't mean something ceases inside emotionally)?????

Or maybe a good book about how to put yourself out there/ prepare oneself spiritually and physically to be able to meet potentials? I mean, really, what is a single Christian supposed to do if meeting people in church/ gauging interest in single's groups at church/ going to the bars and clubs is off limits (at least for me)?????

I know the ultimate is prayer, but just thought some books could also play the role of wise counsel. I appreciate it!!!

How to get a date worth keeping by Dr. Henry Cloud
http://books.google.com/books?id=gnk1cwuQtfAC&dq=how+to+get+a+date+worth+keeping&pg=PP1&ots=Iz_ROMUduz&sig=YgPf33tHTm9WgD6VLkuW5DC80O0&prev=http://www.google.com/search%3Fhl%3Den%26q%3DHow%2Bto%2Bget%2Ba%2Bdate%2Bworth%2Bkeeping&sa=X&oi=print&ct=title&cad=one-book-with-thumbnail#PPA1,M1
(one of the best for just getting you out there, your numbers up, guys/gals attracted to you and dating)

His Rules: God's Practical Road Map for Becoming and Attracting Mr. or Mrs. Right by Christopher L. Burge and Pamela Toussaint Maphttp://www.amazon.com/His-Rules-Practical-Becoming-Attracting/dp/1578569583
Another GOOD book. It is filled with scripture.

Boundaries in Dating by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend (good for exploring where your boundaries are before a relationship and keeping it in check)

The Art of Rejection by Hayley DiMarco & Michael DiMarco (good for helping you deal with rejection, but also creative ways to turn someone else down)

not on singlehood but Captivating [for women] and Wild At Heart [for men] by John eldredge has some pretty darn profound things to say about being men and women and how to define the 2. more importantly though he DRILLS that we are to not find our identity in men or women.

Please though.... take his books with a grain of salt as his words are insanely easy to misunderstand.

I'm not sure, but I have the Wild at Heart book and found it hard to get through. There was a bible study for a bunch of younger guys and they too had trouble finishing it. I've also seen other men that took to it greatly, so I'm not sure.

Every Woman's battle is an interesting read too, for certain struggles of your life.

I just purchased Now and Not Yet by Jennifer A. Marshall. It's supposed to be aboubt makin sense of hte single life in the 21st century. It's geared towards women and seems to be written for those maybe 28 years old and above wondering why they're still single.

I'm not feeling real motivated though at the moment to read a dating relationship book though, for some reason I'd rather read my bible, which is a good thing I guess.

yeah... his writing style is kind of disorginized and as a result he's hard to grasp at times. So I can see how it would be hard to get through, you find yoruself having to go back and re-read because it's hard to get.

Thanks Sampa - I've seen those books around but somehow feel too cheesy to read them (I have issues I know LOL) - but I've heard alot of good stuff about them, especially about H. Cloud and Townsend. Someone else was telling me about an author that talked about doing things and getting out to places that you normally wouldn't do (based on the premise that if you haven't met anyone by now, it might be because you've been doing the same things and going to the same places too long), I can't remember who it is though.

Thanks! I've heard about them too and I'll probably read through a little to see if I can get through his language.

I know what you mean, I don't feel motivated too but I think I have to expand my mental horizons.

I disagree that Wild at Heart is easily misread and hard to get. I think the stumbling block is that so many men refuse to accept it and live life. We want it to be hard to get because a lot of the things John shows us in that book takes us out of our comfort zone.

A book I really am enjoying right now is Soul Cravings by Erwin Raphael McMannus. Very good book.

I would say that Captivating is absolutely fabulous and not hard to get through... I didn't find it was easy to misunderstand either
Hehe, I have captivating at home... I read through some of it so I could understand women better. It's helped a lot.

Except for Townsend...I dont' like (greatly DISlike) the Captivating, WIld at Heart, Every mans' battle, every womans battle, etc....HOnestly the books I find the best are the ones that make me see how special my time as a single woman is...they celebrate who you are today-what will come will come. I don't like books that are purposely created to go for the hunt-it's just not me.I really liked Single: The Art of Being Satisfied, Fulfilled and Independent

Overit, your right, I totally forgot about those kinds of books. The first one that comes to mind, but haven't read it is I married Adventure by Luci Swindoll. I've heard her speak and of coarse her father. She seems like an amazing woman that has really lived her life out for the Lord. Has anyone read this book?
