John had such a great love for Jesus that he channeled that same love to others. 1 John 4:19 "We love because He first loved us" is a powerful revelation of unconditional love we are to have for one another. John witnessed Jesus love for us firsthand. This proclamation comes with truth of what unfailing love is really suppose to feel like. In today's society we can overcome hate with love, evil with good, fear with faith which all stems from us being rooted and grounded in love. Ephesians 3:17 Love like this comes from the Father which is available to us if we just ask for it. James 4:3. As we abide in the Father, he will drawer closer to you and love will be poured out as the revelation on how much he really cares about us is revealed. The agape love is the unconditional love that the Father has for us. As we understand how much the Father loves us, this type of love starts to pour out onto our lives. It is the highest type of love one can have for another.

Other types of love in the Bible
  • Eros is the word for sensual or romantic love.
  • Philia means brotherly love or friendship.
  • Storge describes the love between family members.

I believe this is why John was not martyred like the other Apostles for the great love that he had for others. Based on Bible accounts, John seemed to grow into this type of love as he matured in the Faith. Being one of the Apostles that witnessed the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, he was moved by the compassion and love that was displayed by His sacrifice for us. John 15:13

His not being martyred was not for lack of trying.

He was boiled in oil** in Rome by emperor Domitan but John survived it. Then he was stranded on an island with no support and expected to die of either exposure or starvation. He survived.

Yea they literally just put thim on that island because he didn't die and they didn't want him to keep healing people and preach gospel .

I believe this is why John was not martyred like the other Apostles for the great love that he had for others.

If all the other apostles were martyred except John, that's just how it was.
They had the privilege of being martyred for the faith and laying down their life for their Lord; John didn't. He did nothing to earn the right of an "easy" death.

I don't believe it's right to imply that he lived longer because he loved others more. Taking that argument to it's logical conclusion; anyone who died/dies young doesn't love God very much, whereas those who live to a ripe old age, do. Clearly that's not correct. I know some non Christians who are almost 100, whereas some committed and lovely people have died at a much younger age.

"Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads."

Wouldn't it be wonderful to be like even the least of the disciples or apostles? Are any of them really to be considered least I wonder? I doubt it. But whoever that is, God, let me be like him....
