Quote: << Adam’s sin resulted in a curse being placed not only on Adam, and not only on the entire human race, but on all creation. This event is summarized as “original sin”. >>

It is widely believed, or assumed, that God cursed Adam, or Adam and Eve, in the third chapter of Genesis. It follows that this curse has been inherited by the human race. Actually, Genesis never says that God put any curse directly on Adam. This is particularly clear if we consider that God does curse Cain in Genesis 4.

God and Adam

And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live for ever.”
So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side [Or placed in front] of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
Genesis 3:22-24 NIV

God and Cain

The LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your
brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.
Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground,
which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from
your hand.
When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops
for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.”
Genesis 4:10-12 NIV

After Genesis 4, Cain is not mentioned again in the OT. He is mentioned three times in the epistles but we learn nothing new. There is no change in his status, the curse does not end. We are told to avoid “the way of Cain” and that Cainn “belonged to the evil one.”

By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.
Hebrews 11:4 NIV

Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.
I John 3:12 NIV

Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.
Jude verse 11 NIV

It is worth noting that while the curse was never lifted from Cain, nothing in the Bible suggests that it was passed on to his descendants.

Traditionally, most churches have taught that God laid a curse on Adam, which was inherited by the human race, either physically or legally. In case anyone doubts that this is a teaching, here are a couple more examples.

“… God now turns to Adam. Compared to the punishments given to Eve and the serpent, this curse is longer and more detailed.”

“As with Eve, Adam's curse is one of hardship in doing the necessary work of life, in doing something that would otherwise have brought great joy and meaning to his existence.”

“It's interesting to notice that Eve's curse involved pain and struggle in her family relationships, while Adam's involves pain and frustration in his working life.”

Adam was God's son, Luke 3:38

Unlikely Adam was cursed

Adam's just a favorite whipping boy of people who can't seem to factor the tempter, the serpent into the dust of Adam

Adam was sentenced to have a short period of time in the dust is all. Just like the rest of us. 1 Cor. 15:42-46

The curse put on Adam was that he would have to work hard to survive and the curse that was put on Eve was that her labor pains would be multiplied.

Everything God does (as the perfect Lover) is for the sake of man, to help willing humans in fulfilling their earthly objective. Even "curses" set man up to become like God in that man obtains and grows Godly type Love. If there is no pain, limited resources, sacrifice in obtaining limited resources to Lovingly help others, the experience of exchanging Godly type Love is not available. God Lovingly helps us, so we can go forth helping others (experiencing and growing Godly type Love.

The curse was upon the ground. I have yard full of weeds to show that. So the curse (of the ground) extended to all of mankind.

17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’

“Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat food from it
all the days of your life.
18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”
