A *woman* shall encompass a man".
Is the prophet talking about the virgin birth or the rise of feminism?I've heard it interpreted both ways.What's up with this prophecy?

Also 3:5 The young will rise up against the old, the base against the honorable.

Yes it certainly does and the Lord made it all possible. Which is important to remember.

What's up with this prophecy?

Possibly it is referring to jezebel, evil woman leader corrupting many ... or the same kind of spirit,
and some think it means
that one of the punishments for man's disobedience (continual disobedience) is
that a woman will rule over them... It is punishment, as seen recently also (the last 100 years), as well as the case of jezebel in GOD'S WORD.

Step 1...read how other translation interpret the word "encompass"
Step 2...Look at the word used by understanding the word...first seeing it in through an interlinear translation...then looking up the word.

Now, if you really care you can read a few commentaries.

IMO, it is a statement of a curse earned by the unfaithfulness of the Jews—basically that men are failing to be and do what God commanded.

I am interpreting encompass as to "be over" as in rule over. It means what it would have meant to the hearers. Put yourself in that culture and then imagine hearing, God said "women will rule over you."

My NRSV has a translator's note for this verse that says "Meaning of Hebrew uncertain", and my Oxford Study Bible begins its commentary on the verse with "The meaning is obscure." Whatever you decide the verse means, keep in mind that the translators aren't sure exactly what the Hebrew sentence is saying.

This has been the case for millennia. Victor Borge phrased it pretty well. "A man isn't complete until he's married............then he's finished."

Clearly a contemporary of Henny Youngman. I miss a lot of comedians from the 40s to 80s—well, pretty much anyone from before swearing and belittling others became de rigueur.
