So before it even starts…a reminder.

The so called prophecy is not recognized by the Church.

I learned long ago that the document attributed to St Malachy was a forged document and not from him.
Agreed. But there are many that hang on to it for dear life. We got a poster now on CF going on about it.

A non-practicing Catholic informed me of the forged document back when St John Paul II died, so I had to check to verify that his statement was correct. Sure enough, it was forged. According to those who accept the document as pure truth, Pope John Paul II should've been our last pope and as we know, that didn't happen.

Even some non Catholics talk about it. So odd.

They love anything that matches their favorite theology at the time. True or not.
Yup. It just shows many are uninformed.

Trying to inform them usually does not work either.
Yup. Many Catholics don’t understand Catholic theology, let alone Protestants or other religions.

They just like to goad and attack the Church. That somehow makes them look superior. Odd.

It makes them look like conspiracy theorists imo.

Frankly, this entire subject freaks me out. I did some research on Catholic Answers and while they said that it’s not approved by the Church, and it‘s likely a forgery, they don’t give any definite answers, either. I know Jesus told us that we can’t know when the end of the world will occur, but the St. Malachy thing makes me fear the world is about to end. Is it?

You mean the forgery credited to St. Malachy? What’s come true?
I’d have to do some more digging later but it was something about the earlier prophesies being true.

The St. Malachy prophecies, a list of 112 cryptic Latin phrases describing future popes, are widely considered to be a hoax. While some interpretations suggest certain phrases align with particular popes (e.g., "Light in the sky" for Leo XIII, Wikipedia with a comet in his coat of arms), the overall authenticity and reliability of the prophecies are highly debated.

Elaboration:
  • The Prophecy:
St. Malachy, the 12th-century Irish saint, is credited with a vision that includes 112 phrases describing future popes and their reigns.

  • The Hoax Theory:
Scholars and historians generally view the prophecy as a 16th-century fabrication, potentially designed to influence papal elections.

  • Interpretations:
Some interpretations suggest that specific phrases, such as "Light in the sky" for Leo XIII, Wikipedia who had a comet on his coat of arms, align with the historical record.

  • Lack of Evidence:
However, the prophecy's lack of verifiable evidence and the speculation surrounding its origin led most scholars to conclude it was a hoax.

  • Benedict XV and Paul VI:
Another example given is "Religion depopulated" for Benedict XV (1914-1922), whose papacy coincided with World War I and the Russian Revolution, and "Flower of flowers" for Paul VI (1963-1978), whose coat of arms had a fleur-de-lys.

  • Controversy:
The prophecy has been subject to various interpretations and debates, with some viewing it as a valid prediction and others dismissing it as a fabricated story.
