So i am debating on a genuine leather thompson chain reference Bible or a lambskin thompson chain reference Bible. Money isnt the issue, i am just trying to figure out what is a better choice. I heard and saw that the lambskin is very soft buttery feel and durable. But in doing research it seems like though lambskin is expensive an durable being very soft is not always a good thing cause anything can be durable, but the question is how durable. Then we have calfskin Bibles and goat skin Bibles. I did not see any of those for an option of what i wanted. Actually i take that back i think KJV store has calf skin thompson chain reference Bibles last time i checked. I mean sure its very nice brand new but how good is it gonna be a few years from now after being used.

But i was wondering if anyone has bought any of these "high grade leather" Bibles and knows if its truly worth paying all that money.

I don't know all of the official metrics used to test durability. However, I can give you my own personal experience with Bibles. I have just about every type: goatskin, lambskin, cowhide, and calfskin. The only one I don't have is water buffalo, I think. I haven't had any durability issues with them, but I am also not a heavy-handed reader. Most of my Bibles stay in my home and are only used for reading at my desk. With that said, I do prefer a softer/flexible cover material. Stiffer leather just doesn't feel as good in the hands (imo). Out of the ones I have, my calfskin leather Cambridge Bible feels best in the hands. My goatskin Bible, while not as soft, seems to be a nice compromise between toughness and flexibility.

Personally I prefer an otter box cover on my Bible. ;)

Is the intended use restricted to reading and the typical abuses of travel? Or are we also including slamming it on pulpits when preaching*?

* The practice began when preachers were about to get to an important point but they saw people dozing off in the pews, so they would do this to make enough noise to wake them up.

The preacher, seeing that a fellow had dozed off and not wanting to arouse him with an abrupt sound, asked the member sitting next to him to wake him up. To which the member replied, "You wake him. You put him to sleep."
