Obeying; making choices and the consequences that follow (good and bad); commitment

I hope this is what you are looking for. My pastor did a sermon on kids obeying and I could get the information and pass it on to you if you would like. Just PM me and let me know.

How bout "Peer Pressure". How it's more important to follow Jesus than to follow the popular crowd or the group you hang with if they want to do something you know you shouldn't do. Being a leader and doing the right thing will be more impressive to a teen's friends than if they are always the follower and going with the flow.

You can talk to teens and find out what topics they are interested in, what are they struggling with, what needs they have, to get good preaching topics.

Most adults will have you preach according to their point of view. Though obeying is a good thing, to a lot of teens it can be a turn off if it's from the adults point of view. If I was going to have a sermon on obediance, I would have an object lesson on something that happened when I was teen. A teen needs to be able to relate to the sermon.

Teaching on doing what's right and doing the word will pretty much take care of any obediance issues, in my opinon.

I think one of the most important things kids need to know is that God understands them (through his Son). They feel like he's so out there but he's not...he gets them. He understands what it's like to go through what they go through...he's RELATABLE!!!! I just preached on this and they were a CAPTIVE audience.

I personally am not a fan at all of "topical" preaching. I believe in teaching/preaching through books of the Bible for a few reasons. One it keeps us from avoiding parts of the Scripture that we don't want to deal with - remember ALL Scripture is God-breathed. Two, and more importantly it helps teach/demonstrate to the audience how they can do the same thing, building good study habbits into them. Three, it helps to avoid taking verses out of context which the vast majority of "topical" teachers do in my experience. Guys like Warren and Hybels are some of the worst at doing that.

Titus 2

1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,

2To Timothy, my dear son:
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Encouragement to Be Faithful
3I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. 5I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 6For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
8So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, 9who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.

13What you heard from me, keep as the pattern

Who does God say they are?
How to hear from God?
What is their purpose for being here?
What are their spiritual gifts?
How to have intimacy with the Lord?
Why is it important to pray and forgive?
What does it mean to the love the Lord and love our fellow man?
What are the enemy's tactics?
How to deal with adversity? criticism? rudeness?
How to have fun and be a Christian?

I've more or less swayed between a preference for more "topical" preaching and more straight-up Scripture-based teaching. IMHO BereanTodd makes a good point, there are less-considered portions of the Bible with wonderful lessons to be mined, yet less obviously relevant to today and they get skipped over.

IMHO, the better pastors do relate the Bible to their flock in a way that real-world, modern concerns are addressed. But they're capable and clever enough that they're able to do this even for the passages that are less obvious in their modern pertinence. That's an indication of special skill.
