5 solas or 3?

I've been reading the "Positively Lutheran" book that is published by the WELS affiliated Northwestern Publishing House and it only mentioned 3 solas but I thought there were 5?

In terms of our material principal, there are 3:
Sola Gratis - Grace alone
Sola Fides - Faith Alone
Sola Christus - Christ alone

The "other two" are:
Sola Scriptura - Scripture alone, our formal principal
Soli Deo Gloria - To God alone be the glory

As I understand it, this is not a dogmatic (or even historical) issue. Today, people like to summerize and label things (Calvinists have their "TULIP" for example).


Sola Gratia- Solus Christus - Sola Fide all refer to ONE doctrine, which is often seen as the centerpiece of evangelicalism (using that term in it's original sense). It's a doctrine.

Sola Scriptura is a practice; it is the praxis of embracing Scripture as the rule in the norming of disputed doctrines; it is the norma normans.\

Sola Deo Gloria is related to the doctrine and simply stresses that GOD is the active one, GOD is the Savior, GOD is the one who blesses - and thus gives to HIM - alone - all the glory.

That was cool. I liked the sermon. It's nice to have a face with the poster.

As for the topic, I agree with Josiah's summation. I just think of it as a brief "what it is".

I was trying to explain to my husband about the Lutheran faith last night and wound up reciting the catechism to him. Worked like a charm. He looked at me like I had two heads when it just started rolling off my tongue. Therefore, I postulate that the creeds are much better for description of the faith than the sola's.

It is fun to do Latin though. Speaking of Latin. Someone has a blog where they do a paragraph in Latin. I started reading it, word by word and s l o w l y translating what it said and about halfway though looked down and the second paragraph had it in English. Duh.
