What is the connection or significance between Joseph being sold for 20 pieces and Yeshua [ben joseph] being sold for 30 pieces of silver?

Gen 37:28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

Mat 26:14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, 15 And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

The first connection is the silver itself. Silver spiritually signifies atonement or redemption. Here are just a few verses to make that point

Exo 30:15 The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel [of silver], when they give an offering unto the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.

Mat 26:14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, 15 And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

Strong's definition of silver is:
H3701 - כּסף - keseph - keh'-sef - From H3700; silver (from its pale color); by implication money: - money, price, silver (-ling).

There are but two precious metals mentioned in God's Word, silver and gold. In the temple silver is found in the holy and gold in the most holy.

Silver - Atonement
Ex 30:15 The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when [they] give an offering unto the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls. 16 And thou shalt take the atonement money [Hebrew - keseph - silver] of the children of Israel, and shalt appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; that it may be a memorial unto the children of Israel before the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.

Joseph explains the silver cost of atonement to his brothers
Gen 45:5 Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. ... 7 And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. 8 So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.

Zechariah the Prophet wrote about thirty pieces of silver and God's judgment.

Zech 11:4 Become shepherd of the flock doomed to slaughter ... because “their own shepherds have no pity on them” and because of this, God says
Zech 11:6 I will cause each of them to fall into the hand of his neighbor, and each into the hand of his king, and they shall crush the land, and I will deliver none from their hand
Zech 11;12 Then I said to them, “If it seems good to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.” And they weighed out as my wages thirty pieces of silver. Then the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the lordly price at which I was priced by them. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord, to the potter. Then I broke my second staff Union, annulling the brotherhood between Judah and Israel
.

I have yet to figure out how the house of the Lord and the potter are related. The cost of betrayal and redemption, is from what I understand, is about a day’s wages or the price of a slave depending on which article you are reading is thirty pieces of silver

Judas was like Pilate, trying to wash his hand of his part said
Matt 27:4 “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself”

Zechariah writes, “Throw it to the potter” which looked prophetically forward to when Yeshua [ben Joseph] betrayed by Judas, who upon returning the thirty pieces of silver, the Jewish religious leaders took the coins and purchased the "potter's field".

Matt 27:7 “the potter’s field” later called the “Field of Blood”. Interestingly, this place was used for the burial of strangers from what I can dig up.

Matt 27;9 “Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, ‘And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me’”

Why was the price thirty pieces of silver? The answer is found in the value of a servant. In the book of Leviticus a value was placed upon servants.

Lev. 27:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When a man shall make a singular vow, the persons shall be for the LORD by thy estimation. 3 And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary. 4 And if it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels. 5 And if it be from five years old even unto twenty years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels. 6 And if it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be three shekels of silver. 7 And if it be from sixty years old and above; if it be a male, then thy estimation shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels.

Yeshua came not to redeem himself, but to redeem his people from their sins. Here is what I am going to suggest, since His people are his bride therefore he was sold for the price of his bride.

"The slave’s death was compensated by the thirty pieces of silver."

In Joseph's case, he didn't die at all at the dry well scene.

I think it is unrelated.
BUT.. the connection between the compensation for the death of the slave and Yeshua's ??

I have made this connection with Joseph (old testament) and Jesus (new testament) until I read this post which led me to pick up the Bible to dig into this some more... There were, in fact, a lot of similarities between the two stories.

Joseph (old testament)

  • 1 of the 12 sons of Jacob (1 of the 12 tribes of Israel)
  • His birth was considered a miracle as Jacob was over 90 years old when he was born, and Rachel could not have children for a very long time
  • Judah, his brother sold (betrayed) him into slavery
  • Sold for 20 pieces of silver
Jesus (new testament)
  • Had 12 disciples
  • His birth was a miracle due to his mother Mary being a virgin
  • Judas, one of his disciples sold (betrayed) him
  • Sold for 30 pieces of silver

I can't seem to ignore the obvious correlation that strongly suggests this was written by men over long periods of time where typical folklore repeats itself. I know I shouldn't be saying this as a Christian but this specific correlation with the two key characters of the Bible has created some doubt in my mind. Has no one else felt this after learning of these similarities?

Welcome tot he MJ forum!

No, for me these similarities are not concerning. Now, that is not to say that there were not similarities between other parts and other religions that did not have me questioning my faith - there is an old thread that goes through them pretty specifically.

In this case the similarities are relatively common themes/prophesy in the Bible (miracle births, betrayal), intentional/prophetic (12 tribes/disciples), or coincidental (silver amount - which is not the same anyway). The amount of silver matters not really, it is more about the intention of the passage.
