  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Divine Service explained

That was great. Thanks for sharing. I've also been reading Jordan Cooper's book titled Liturgical Worship: A Lutheran Introduction and it's been great, especially for someone new to liturgical services like myself.

Does the Lutheran Church ordain women?

What's the deal with DCEs? They can be female and seem to do a lot of things pastors do (with the exception of preaching the Word and administering the Sacraments... although at our LCMS church they help distribute communion). It feels like a slippery slope.

    Should women be distributing communion?

We're recent converts from Southern Baptist to Lutheran, having become members at an LCMS church this year. My understanding from the LCMS web site is that women are discouraged from helping with the distribution of communion. However, at our church there are always women (usually DCEs, but...

How to take the chalice during Holy Communion?

We're new to this church, but my understanding from the LCMS web site is that individual cups are common in most LCMS churches now. I would assume they are properly washed before disposal. However, my question has nothing to do with individual cups, but rather how to indicate a preference for...

How to take the chalice during Holy Communion?

During Holy Communion, our church offers both individual disposable cups and a chalice. How does one indicate they want the chalice? The servers offer an individual cup by default, saying "the blood of Christ," and it seems rude to say "no thanks." Is there a commonly understood "polite" way of...

Bow when crossing the altar outside the rails?

We don't kneel during the general confession, but we do cross ourselves when the pastor declares God's forgiveness.

Bow when crossing the altar outside the rails?

My wife and I were brought up as Baptists, but for various reasons began attending a Lutheran church (LCMS) earlier this year and have felt very much at home. (One of the reasons being our old Baptist church forgoing communion for an entire year and a half due to the rona.) We're planning on...
