Greenland’s leader Múte Egede said he is prepared to enter into negotiations with President-elect Trump about the future of the mineral-rich arctic territory — but warned his people had no interest in becoming Americans.

At a press conference Friday in Denmark, which exercises nominal sovereignty over Greenland, Egede said he accepted that Greenland was “a place that the Americans see as part of their world” and that while he has not spoken with Trump, he was open to “discussions about what unites us.”

“We are ready to talk,” he said. “Cooperation is about dialogue. Cooperation means that you will work towards solutions.”

This would be of great benefit to the United States. Perhaps they will sell or lease part of Greenland.

I'm sure oil companies would be happy to start buying up parcels to start drilling baby drilling. Lol

Low quality healthcare at sky-high prices, college/post-graduate education that will tie you in debt, random mass shooting/knifing incidents, road rage, self-absorbed and corrupt politicians and entertainers. Danes (or "Greenlanders"?) must looking forward to it!

If there is a greater good on it for everyone concerned, why not?
If there was, then no reason why not, although I think that the proposition should have been put respectfully rather than Trump just saying he wants Greenland for the USA. However I doubt that it would be better for the Greenlanders to lose their country, their identity and their way of life.

They’ve already said that they are willing to talk but have no interest in becoming Americans.

Why should they just because some people in the USA want it?
They should not just because one side wants to. Any deal should be beneficial to both parties. If no deal is made you set the stage for future negotiations on other subjects.

Agreed. It seems like the best result might be the USA having a military base there.

The U.S. military maintains a permanent presence at the Pituffik air base in Greenland's northwest. Greenland is crucial for the U.S. military and its ballistic missile early-warning system, since the shortest route from Europe to North America runs via the island.

Then keep the status quo? :)

Well I think they want change that given they want to talk. :)
Denmark is discussing an increased U.S military presence in Greenland. Maybe a permanent lease, maybe they will sell land, or maybe a pledge to work together.

The fact they are willing to talk all the sudden…. when it seemed like a hard no in the beginning has certainly piqued my curiosity!
