Hello folks. Think of this for a second. Imagine if someone from the middle ages in 1269 AD predicted that man will land on the moon. The 700 year duration between the middle ages and the Apollo 11 moon landing is the length of time between prophet Isaiah in ~700 BC predicting Jesus being conceived by a virgin around 4 BC. Here are four verses which predict Jesus and the suffering of Jesus, centuries before His birth, ministry and crucifixion.
Date | June 28, 2024 | Son of Man (Old Testament Jesus) |
Verse | Daniel 7:13-14 (NIV): "In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed." Isaiah 7:14 (NIV): "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." Isaiah 61:1-3 (NIV): "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor." Psalm 22:16-18 (NIV): "Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment." |
Prompt | Explain these four passages. How do these verses written a few centuries before Christ relate to and predict the birth of Jesus, the Gospel, Crucifixion, and the Resurrection? Use New Testament parallels in the first part of your response. What can we do as Christians to read, understand, and connect the Old Testament to the New Testament? |
Explanation | The Old Testament passages contain prophetic elements that, although written hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus, are fulfilled in His life, ministry, and the spread of the Gospel. Let's explore how these texts relate to the key aspects of Jesus' mission and the New Testament.

Societal Relevance | These verses above show that God is omniscient, as these verses were written between 1000 BC and 500 BC. God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) spoke through the Holy Spirit to the prophets in the Old Testament. To connect the Old and New Testaments, it's essential to read them in context and with an understanding of the historical and cultural backgrounds. Here are some practical ways to deepen your study:
