First a little context before I paraphrase Biden.
The scenario is that Trump has already tried to install fake electors and get Pence to ignore his oath to the Constitution and reject the legal votes of the people so he could stay in power. To be clear the risk to democracy is that this time if Trump comes to power, he will install people in key positions who will have no problem putting Trump above the Constitution and make Trump a dictator.

With that in mind, my short answer to your question is that more and more prominent democrats began expressing their sincere concern to Biden, that Biden was not going to be able to defeat Trump and the threat he poses because his age had become too much of a liability as a campaign issue. So, Biden was convinced into dropping out rather than risking losing due to his age.
