I'm not at liberty to explain the forbidden fruit for only the LORD God himself reveals truth, but the answer is clear as day - it's right in the text of Gen 2:17 - IF one has the the spiritual eyes to see. Curiously, God considered the tree of knowledge of good and evil as GOOD. Gen 1:29, Gen 2:9

Where does it say that those fruits are literal? I have yet to see a voice "walking" or a serpent upright and talking, or even night and day existing before the celestial bodies were created...

Not to be intentionally contrary, but wouldn't you agree that the knowledge of good and evil is to be regarded as good to the degree that God is wielding it, but bad for us because isn't it clear by this time in human history that we can't handle it independently of His wisdom? Look what we've reeked upon creation and each other by daring to replace Him and wield it ourselves.

Hmm.. hard to conclude what's possible seeing as we weren't there. Kinda God's point to Job. For all we know there were literal/spiritual fruits and walking voices, and upright talking serpents running around all over the place. Not to mention talking asses (well, still plenty of those still around), split seas, pillars of fire directing traffic, and on and on.

Kinda presumes what God is, and is not capable of doing during each unique epoch in history in any way that pleases Him - even in doing it one way in the past and another in the present.

Job 38:4-7 NIV

"Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
6 On what were its footings set,
or who laid its cornerstone—
7 while the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?"

Hmm... never heard stars singing and angels shouting, personally. What an absurd notion, eh?

That is like asking whether the Ring of Sauron was of pure gold, or was of gold & some other metal. For the purposes of the story in LOTR, whether the Ring was of pure gold or not is of no importance at all. It suffices that the Ring was of gold.

And exactly the same applies to the forbidden fruit; for the purposes of the story, the identity of the fruit does not matter. Its function is: (1) to be forbidden; (2) to be eaten by those forbidden to eat it.
