  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump fired the entire National Science Board yesterday!

I don't doubt it will be pretty delayed because they're trying to restructure, but to eliminate the board permanently they'd have to amend, or repeal the NSF act. Even with grant funding under political control there's other advisory roles for the board. Also, fwiw, the site for the NSB still...

Trump fired the entire National Science Board yesterday!

I wasn't aware that there was anything set in stone yet as for board replacements. Iirc, they wanted some senate confirmation.

Trump fired the entire National Science Board yesterday!

As I understand it, this isn't anti-intellectual so much as a response to perceived ideological conquest. The quoted Democratic response called it stupid, and insisted it would harm advancement, but this is simply what one would expect an ideological opponent to say. I didn't vote for Trump...

It doesn't as far as I am concerned, but I was just giving supplemental information since the topic came up.

    Icons of Evolution

Antony Flew was the author of "Theology and Falsification", and "The Presumption of Atheism" which effectively framed the rhetoric that has been used by New Atheist movement even to this day. Even the view of atheism as a default position is from him.

The origin of the universe - short exercise

That sounds more like a Simulation Hypothesis than Classical Theism. Nevertheless, I find a Simulation Hypothesis more probable than some kind of naturally spawning finely tuned universe.

    C&E Thread Archive

I hate to be a buzzkill, but all the links here are dead. Perhaps a testament to a bygone era. It may be that only The Wayback Machine can save us now.

Can I just... Hang out at church?

Right, it seems effectively pointless to waste so much on a building that no one can access at any time except to have a "sunday experience" which has seemed banal to me for a long time. It would be great if churches opened up and allowed intellectual discourse and study, and pursuit of...

    So what evidence satisfies you?

I don't think this is true. I have known a number of non-religious individuals that believe in ghosts. Ironically, the lack of an organized religion seems to make people more likely to believe in astrology from my personal experience.

Because you're sitting at the computer, indoors.

    Can anyone interpret this list?

I feel like I'm missing something here. The EWG (Environmental Working Group) has a list of cities and data on water contaminants, but in the search it seems like the cities link to the utilities of other cities that aren't connected. For example in Michigan, West Branch gives links for Summit...

    why did god create predators?

Well, assuming suffering and death are necessary for a kind of "free will", and the world wasn't developed under direct, or deterministic control, it's not surprising that suffering and death would work their way into the outcome. The Christian idea of remaking the world has always been a bit...

Yeah, of course. I've been wrong about things before.

    ID is officially dead.

The way I read that was that you wouldn't give the rebuttal in question a hearing. Apologies if I've misunderstood you twice now.

    ID is officially dead.

I hope not. I'd rather win or lose an evidential debate.
