  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I Corinthians 10, and Sacrifices--"The Table of the Lord"

Christ did not come to abolish the Hebrew faith in the one true God, nor to discard the Law given through Moses, but to fulfill and transform it. His mission was one of continuity brought to completion, not rupture. As He Himself declares: "For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass...

    Doctrinal Differences in Different Denominations

I couldn't agree more, but doctrines are what is taught, and dogmas are beliefs that one is obliged to hold. No, dogmas have changed since they were first taught and made public. If you could provide one, I would appreciate it. Indeed they do, but we are talking about dogmas that have changed...

    Doctrinal Differences in Different Denominations

Trent didn't change any doctrines of the Church. So, I'm a bit confused what "reformation" occurred after the Protestant deformation. There was, and is, a counter revolution to the Great Protest. JoeT

I Corinthians 10, and Sacrifices--"The Table of the Lord"

The Greek word ἀνάμνησις (anamnesis) has a liturgical, covenantal, and sacrificial significance, St. Jerome didn't translate it to mean memorial, (the mental recollection - memory). Rather the St. Jerome used commoratio or commemorate in his Vulgate.. We find "Do this for a commemoration of...

On the sacrificial nature of our faith

The value of the sacrifice lay in the worth of the victim, not in the worshiper’s subjective feelings or the degree of personal inconvenience. Therefore, how much I personally “give up” is not what makes something a sacrifice. In the New Covenant, the Victim offered is Christ Himself. He is the...

On the sacrificial nature of our faith

And He permits us to join that sacrifice in worship. We fully agree that Jesus offered the one perfect sacrifice once for all. The Catholic question is not whether Christ’s sacrifice is repeated, because it is not. Rather Christ commanded us to participate in that same ‘one sacrifice’. ‘Do...

I Corinthians 10, and Sacrifices--"The Table of the Lord"

Let's look at a few Greek words before you make Christ into a symbol or metaphor. The Greek word pneuma is commonly translated spirit, but its fuller meaning points to an inner, animating force that unites the human person to God — that which “quickens” or gives life. In the Johannine and...

I Corinthians 10, and Sacrifices--"The Table of the Lord"

He command "do it" we abide in Him. You aren't doing anything to Christ, I'd suggest the Real Presence is doing it to you He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, abideth in me, and I in him [John 6:57] JoeT

I Corinthians 10, and Sacrifices--"The Table of the Lord"

My point about equivalency was about how he treats each of the three types of sacrifice. And all three types treat eating and drinking to create a real fellowship. He holds the pagan in low regard, even discuss, the, the Jews as an Old Testament participation and sharing on a limited bases, and...

I Corinthians 10, and Sacrifices--"The Table of the Lord"

It shouldn't be over your head, all the answers are in the Book. St. Paul is indeed using familiar 1st century analogies. He's making the argument for the "real Presence". 1 Corinthians 10:16–22 he uses the Greek koinōnia (participation/sharing - Strong's g2844) and metechein (to partake...

I Corinthians 10, and Sacrifices--"The Table of the Lord"

While they are three different sacrifices, the pagan, Jew, and the Pascal Lamb of God there is no equivalency between them - except the word "sacrifice". One is pagan with meat offered in temples, one is the animal victims of Israel, the other is the Eucharist, the bread and wine at the...

The eating of the victim; the animal that was ritually offered and killed in the context of the sacrifice. In Latin Victima, in Hebrew Korban/korbanot. [Source ] [Source ] The Temple of Judaism was not at all unlike the pagan temples in the same era. They systematically operated large-scale...

I Corinthians 10, and Sacrifices--"The Table of the Lord"

The first and second bulleted questions refer directly to the Eucharist, and they imply a real presence because of the sacrificial context Paul invokes. In Judaism, to partake was sacramental language, not merely symbolic or metaphorical. The Old Testament makes this explicit, especially in...

According to Catholicism, what must one believe and do to be saved?

I wasn't thinking about synergism\monergism. But if I were I would have throned it in synergism. It takes two to tango, God to give the grace, us to receive or reject grace. In any event, you are welcomed. JoeT
