I'd be really interested to know how much of their direction is from him as a visionary and how much is just from him as a piggy bank who stays out of the way. I've read comments (that at least seem to ring true) that, at least in the past, he was a pretty decent engineering manager, which I can believe. But that's hard to jive with some of his more recent actions. I wonder if he just takes SpaceX more seriously and respects the level of expertise required to get anything done, whereas with Twitter and, to a lesser extent, Tesla, he sees them more as playthings.
I've heard the same things about him. I expect as a manager he likely is good.

Well if Elon Musk has never believed in Jesus and become a born again child of God. What good will catching rockets do him after he has died.

Maybe he is like another rich person who thinks he can scientifically over come death.

I do hope that Musk converts to Christ, or else he will just die and not go to Heaven. So I do agree with you here, but this is a lighthearted conversation about space technology, not an evangelizing mission. But yes, Musk should ideally convert to Christianity. Why catch rockets as an atheist, when one can catch rockets as a Christian? :)

For me, I can support Musk's space program, but still not like the guy for buying up Twitter, inventing the brain chip, and supporting Trump.

As a moderate, one must be able to separate a guy's space program from his politics. Space is cool, brother, and has been for me for over 15 years. Now, I do not worship a man, except for Jesus, but I am proud that Musk's company SpaceX achieved a sci-fi milestone in real life. Even though SpaceX may have some ethical issues with employee treatment, overall, the company has advanced aerospace technology by many years. :)

Remember Tintin (a European comic that is popular around the globe)? There was a comic book on how Tintin went into space on a single stage to orbit (SSTO) rocket that could return back to Earth and land. Finally, in 2024, this is almost a reality, with both stages of Musk's rocket safely returning to Earth.

This was my favorite comic as a kid back in the late 2000s, but it was written during the mid-20th century.

Billions of bilious blue blistering barnacles in a thundering typhoon, that issue was the very first Tintin comic I read waaay back when I was 7.

Btw if you don’t already read Asterix, I highly recommend it.

My dad likes Asterix as well, so I need to find a starting point for that one, and try it out. I think my parents got an Asterix book for me. Tintin is good stuff, and I remember the "blistering barnacles" line from Haddock.

Looks like that was my first Tintin comic as well, around age 8 or 9. :)

And many who would be praising him for advancing the space program hate him instead because of that.
Not sure who exactly this post is talking about. But if we're bringing up generalities, some might also see him as a person who does some good and some bad rather than one to be unconditionally praised because he supports a particular political candidate.

It's interesting to me how anything SpaceX does is classified as "Elon Musk does X".
It's not really Elon Musk though, is it. It's his gigantic team of scientists who are doing literally ALL of the work.
Back in the day, we would say "NASA accomplishes X"...we would NEVER say the head of NASA and CERTAINLY not the president.

Now it's Musk,, he's getting all the credit.

Just a weird thing I notice.
That's a good point. Like how many people you think can tell you the name of the NASA Administrator who put Alan Scott into space?

It's a smart move by him because his other business models are not exactly brimming with success. This way it looks like he's actually doing something useful and grand.

Elon Musk's SpaceX landed a large booster rocket safely back upon its launch pad. This is an amazing feat and it's something that NASA has never been able to do.

It's kind of cool, but not some game changing break through. If it works as planned it will reduce the cost of the heavy booster by some in construction, but you'd get the same benefit with the floating pads used to land the Falcon 9 rockets already. This whole contraption is just begging for a landing failure to damage it or the tower (or worse if the failure happens a km or so up).

I know it's supposed to be a joke, but my brother worked at Johnson Space Center for about 20 years. I've roamed the halls with him. I've seen his mission team photos. And if you think that career government contractors in an old established industry like aerospace, mostly located in Texas, are a diverse bunch, well... I've got a bridge to sell you.

vs this:

Why? I doubt he personally hires everybody.
He makes it all possible.
It's amazing how some people can't acknowledge someone's accomplishments simply because of their political affiliation

SpaceX has over 13000 employees. Yet it's only Elon who gets credit for the things the company does? And if the standard is "he makes it all possible" Then the credit goes to George W. Bush because SpaceX was about to go bankrupt before getting a major government contract in 2008.

I agree this is a big deal, but giving Elon sole credit for it is ridiculous. It wouldn't be possible without the 10s of thousands of workers that have worked in SpaceX over the last couple of decades of the 10s of billions of dollar given in government grants and contracts.

I didn't say he he gets sole credit I said he makes it all possible, didn't he get the government contract? I'm sure he had help with that too
