“The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. ‘For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:14-16 ESV)
The Natural Person
Who is “the natural person”? According to the Scriptures, this is a person outside of genuine faith in Jesus Christ. He does not believe in Jesus Christ, in truth, even if he professes faith in the Lord with his lips. He is still of the flesh, still walking in sin and not in walks of obedience to the Lord and to his commands. Again, he may give lip service to the Lord, but his heart is far from the Lord, because he is still walking in the darkness, still living for the pleasures of sinful and worldly desires, and not for the Lord in holy living.
But darkness is his old friend, and he does not want to let him go. For he is addicted (enslaved) to the darkness (sin). And in the darkness he can be and do whatever his sinful heart desires when no one else can see but God. He can let his imagination go wild with all sorts of evil and/or worldly desires in his fantasy world where only he knows what is truly going on inside him, other than God knows. And even if he gives lip service to the Lord, it is not real, for what is implanted in his brain still remains while he is in the dark.
And so spiritually he is asleep, not awake. And even if he hears the words of the Lord, he is unresponsive to the words which are encouraging him to come out of the darkness and to now live for God in a walk of godliness, holiness, and moral purity. He may know what the Scriptures teach, but he is unresponsive when it comes to shutting that door to his dark world and to coming into the true light where he will be required to die with Christ to sin and now walk in obedience to the Lord and to his commands in holy living.
Although he may be fully aware of his entrapment, and of his need for deliverance, he will not reach out for help, but he will remain in the silence of his secret world, for that is home for him. That is his comfort. Yet, he is not at peace because he knows right from wrong, and he knows he is doing wrong and not right, and so he may be easily agitated, and easily angered, for he is unsettled. He is unresolved in his conflict between darkness and light, and between evil and good, and between the flesh and God.
And since he is keeping his secret life a secret, and he is not reaching out for help from anyone, he is walking this path all alone. For his trust is in his flesh and not in God. His walk is not a walk of faith in the Lord but one ridden with lies, adulteries, unfaithfulness, and lack of desire for God. Pride rules his life. He is a “my do it” kind of person. So submission to the Lord is not on his “wish list.” For his heart is hardened against the Lord and against God’s will and purpose for his life, for he is ruled by selfish desire.
Now all of this does not describe every individual who is “the natural person,” but all in this category are without genuine faith and obedience to the Lord Jesus and for whom sin is still holding them in captivity. And many of them do profess faith in Jesus Christ, but the light that they are following is a false light intended to tickle itching ears and to not offend the ungodly. And this false light is what is dominating the teachings of “the gospel” here in America in the institutional market-driven “churches” of today.
And this is not being addressed and dealt with in the bulk of what is called “Christianity” in America today, for the majority seem to have all adopted this false diluted gospel message which makes no requirements of the “believer” in Jesus to die with him to sin and now to walk with him in obedience to his commands. And so this false teaching is growing like cancer throughout the church and into people’s hearts and lives and practices. So many profess faith in the Lord, but they live the opposite of his will.
So many professers of faith in the Lord are living unholy and ungodly and immoral and impure and worldly and idolatrous lives uncommitted to following Jesus Christ with their lives wholeheartedly. So many are making entertainment and prominent people in society and worldly preachers their gods who they idolize instead of God being their only God. And so God and his Word, taught in the appropriate context, end up falling by the wayside while they live their lives for the pleasures of this world and not for God.
But we live in a “Christian” culture here in America where they want everything pleasant and feel good and non-confrontational. Few, if any, are willing to bring out into the open the cancer that is killing the church from the inside out. But rather they will focus their attention on their dynamic speakers and their appealing bands (“worship teams”) and on the decor of their meeting places, and on doing what will attract the world to their gatherings, and on what will keep them coming back for more of the same.
So, if you are one of the few who is actually teaching the truth of the Scriptures in their appropriate context, and who is not afraid to speak the truth of the gospel, at the risk at being rejected, you may find yourself alone a lot of the time, and maybe even cast aside by others, including by “the church,” because you don’t blend in with the culture and with the majority and with their marketing schemes for how to “grow their churches.” So those who speak the truth end up being the persecuted for their faith in the Lord.
The Godly Person
But if we are in Christ, by genuine faith in him, we should be those who are living the opposite of what was described above as those who are still walking according to the flesh.
For the Scriptures teach that if anyone is in Christ he is now a new creation. His old life of living in sin and for self is now passed away, and all things have now become new. For by faith in Jesus Christ we now die with him to sin, we are reborn of the Spirit of God, and we now walk (in conduct, in practice) in obedience to our Lord and to his New Covenant commands. But if sin is still what we practice, and not righteousness, and not obedience to our Lord, then we do not have salvation from sin nor eternal life with God.

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.
Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.
