Is Trivium a Religious Band?

Is Trivium a Religious Band?

Before delving into the religious status of Trivium, let’s first examine what it means to be a religious band. A religious band can be identified by the style of songs it churns out. Songs by a religious band are usually centered on the religious beliefs of a particular religious group.

Though some religious elements are always embedded in songs by Trivium, band members have however come out to state that the band is not religious but is only exploring these themes because it applies to humans, and they wish to reach out to people through their music. They produce music that transcends religious, political, or social barriers. In an interview with Trivium and Chad Bowar of Heavy Music HQ, the band members stated:

“For us in Trivium, what we’ve always done is our music has been the outlet and the escape from everything that people want to escape from in life. That’s what we offer our music up as. Whatever you’re into, whatever your beliefs, religiously, politically, lifestyle, whatever it may be, we’re the band where all those barriers go away and people can just come be a part of our show, listen to our music whether by themselves or with their friends and just escape everything and find something to relate to.”

In a 2010 interview with the band’s frontman Matt Heafy and Blabbermouth, he revealed that the band addresses everything that relates to human existence which does not necessarily mean they are a religious band. In his words:

“I did get criticized by some of the people, not in our band but in our team, the industry people, saying you don’t need to come out this much about it but I said, ‘Why not?’ Everyone else gets to say how they’re so against it whether it be religions or political groups or whatever it is. I wanted to tackle everything.”

Trivium is notable for employing some religious terms and messages and adding meanings to their songs through religious influences. Some examples of such songs include;

The sin and the Sentence

The sin and the sentence

Penance in the fire (to a lie)

The sin and the sentence

The plagues grip your throat (they’ll genuflect to a lie)

The sin and the sentence

Penance in the fire (to a lie)

The sin and the sentence

The plagues grip your throat (they’ll genuflect to a lie)”

The Revanchist

“In me, you can confide

You say you’ve lost your world

You say you’ve lost your faith

I’ll be the shelter in the dark

Clothe you in my hate

Profiteers and preachers

Sycophants and teachers

The Revanchist – his thoughts become mine

How deep they become intertwined

He said to submit for salvation

Submit for salvation

The age-old lie”

Vengeance

In the moonlight, you’re fighting for silver luster

Perhaps you can call this your baptism

Did you tell them it would bring them closer to God?

So that’s how you can call this your baptism

I’ll be the servant who drives purity through the heart

And there’s a filter you need, so our sin is all we bring…..

I’ll be the torch to burn it all right down into the ground

Heaven will never be a sight for you

What goes on in your crazed mind, madman clairvoyant?

Raped of innocence

Shattering the cradle

In the name of God “
