Jason used songwriting as a method to cope with the stress when his parents divorced and have been writing songs ever since.  When he moved to Los Angeles, he met Sergio Andrade, who played bass and lived next door to Jason in 1995.  In 1996, Jason, Sergio, and Jon “Diff Palmer formed a band called Blyss, which was the predecessor to Lifehouse.  They performed live shows in high schools and colleges Collin Hayden and Aaron Lord joined Blyss.  Producer Ron Aniello received word of the band and introduced Jason to Jude Cole, who introduced him to Michael Osti, principal of Dreamworks records.  Ron produced their first demos in 1998, and Dreamworks Records financially backed it.  Those recordings were put in the EP Diff’s Lucky Day in 1999.

Twelve of the fifteen songs were re-recorded for their debut album No Name Face under the band’s new name-Lifehouse.  Jason talked about the band’s new name by saying,  “It’s about what we do as a band and for me personally. Most of this record is about my life and about life’s circumstances. Not only my life but other people’s lives. We thought Lifehouse was a good name for it.”

The album was a success and established the band selling more than four million copies.  The first single, Hanging by a Moment, was part of the reason for the success..  It was the third song in chart history to be the number one song of the year on the Billboard Hot 100 even though it never reached number one on a weekly survey.  The second and third singles were not as successful as the first one.

The song Everything Was used in the show Smallville multiple times, including in the pilot episode and the Season one finale.  The song You and Me made it on Smallville’s second soundtrack.

After the release of the first album, Jon left the band and was eventually replaced by Rick Woolstenhulme.  Rich was rehearsing before the audition in an adjacent room, First Time, Jason and Sergio would pass him without meeting each other.

The second album, Stanley Climbfall, had a success that was short-lived.  The first album overshadowed the singles Sin, and Take Me Away.  After the debut of the album, Rick’s brother, Sean, became the fourth member in 2002. Sergio left the band in 2004 with Sean leaving shortly after.

Bryce Soderberg became the band’s new bassist later in 2004.  Their third album, Lifehouse, was released in 2005.  The first single, called You and Me, was successful and stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for 62 weeks.  That song also appeared in Smallville.  They actually performed it along with three other songs on one episode of the show.

Theo’s fourth album was called Who We Are and was released in 2007.  The first single, First Time, debuted at number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 3 on the Hot Adult Top 40 charts.  The third single, Broken, appeared on several TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy, and Criminal Minds, among others. It got up to number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The album was certified gold by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America).

Smoke and Mirrors was released in 2010 and debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200 with 54,000 copies sold.  That was the highest chart debut at that time, surpassing Stanley Climbfall in 2002.

The sixth album was called Almeria, named after a city in Spain.  The album only had one single, Halfway Gone.  The album was met with mixed reviews.

Lifehouse went on hiatus in 2013 so each member could work on other projects.  They went back to the studio in 2014 to record the album Flight, which was an independent release.  They also announced the hiatus was over.

They released their Greatest Hits album in 2017, which featured every radio single in order of when they were released.  They toured with Switchfoot in support of the album.
