Is Audioslave a Christian Band?

The defunct Audioslave was formed in Glendale, California in 2001. The band constituted the quartet of vocalist Chris Cornell, guitarist Tom Morello, backing Vocalist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk.

Audioslave came into existence when Zack de la Rocha, the lead vocalist of Rage Against the Machine popularly known as Rage, left the band. In a bid to continue chasing their music dreams, the other remaining 3 members of Rage brought in Cornell from Soundgarden to form Audioslave.

Though short-lived, the band released 3 studio albums with “Revelations” being the last which was released in 2006 before the band split in 2007. Within the period of operation, the band also released a couple of singles, received 3 Grammy nominations, and sold millions of their records globally. The group came together once again in 2017 for a concert but that was the end of it after the sad death of Chris Cornell, some months later.

Some top songs by the band have religious themes and deep spiritual messages and had raised the question of the band being a Christian band. An analysis of factors like; themes, lyrics, and style of music by the band as well as comments from members of the band in this article will answer the question: is Audioslave a Christian band?

Is Audioslave a Religious Band?

Is Audioslave a Religious Band?

Although we’ve noticed some religious themes and other elements of spirituality in their songs, we can’t say Audioslave is a religious band because of contrary statements from members of the band.

Different members of the band have made public comments about their religious status and the first was the late vocalist Cornell. Cornell revealed that he came from a family with mixed religious beliefs. His father had a catholic background, his mum was a Jew, then he later got married to Vick Karayiannis, a practicing Greek Orthodox.

He mentioned also that he went to a Catholic school, didn’t do well, and was almost kicked out because he asked a lot of questions about Catholic practices. According to Cornell, this was one of the reasons he gave up on religion. “So many questions without answers”.

The vocalist stated that he will not follow any school of thought but will rather be a free thinker and open-minded. In his words: “So many bad things, as well as good things, have happened based on people blindly following religion, that I kind of feel like I want to stay away from any type of specific denomination or any religion, for no other reason than just that”.

In an interview with Briony Edwards of Metal Hammer, vocalist Commerford revealed that he does not believe in anything religious. According to him religion, racism, and money are the roots of everything evil in the world and he does not believe in any of it.

Guitarist Tom Morello revealed in an interview with Express that he grew up in a catholic church but faith is something he has wrestled with his whole life. He did not provide a straightforward answer to the question but said rather “I haven’t examined closely enough to answer, I’ll have to think more about that”.

The fourth member of the band Brad Wilk has been rumored to be a Buddhist, but the drummer has not made any public comment about this religious stance.

Songs by the band were influenced by the diverse religious backgrounds of band members. Although some members had stated that they do not subscribe to any organized religion, spiritual themes are still noticed in some of their songs.

What kind of Music Band is Audioslave?

Audioslave is described as an American rock supergroup. The band was labeled a supergroup because band members belonged to other music groups and some were successful as solo artists.

The band adopted hard rock, alternative rock, alternative metal, and post-grunge genres of music. Their style of music is an aesthetic blend of melodic and harsh vocals, less intense and abrasive tones, distorted guitar/mid-paced guitar riffs, and emphatic beats. The band was also able to imbibe musical influences from 1960s Funk, Soul and R&B styles.

When members of Rage came together with Cornell to form “Audioslave”, fans expected their songs to still have the political overtone as was in Rage. However, politics and rap were ruled out as the band adopted a unique perspective and style.

The lyrics and tone of songs released by the band were always poetic and inspiring and were embedded with diverse themes, ranging from hope to spirituality and religion, spiritual freedom, love and compassion, individuality, politics, self-examination and self-love, mistakes, depression, and other life challenges.

With their heavy riffs, inspiring vocals, and thrilling live performance, Audioslave was able to build a strong fanbase in Glendale and other parts of America within a short period.

Is Audioslave a Christian Band?

Is Audioslave a Christian Band?

A Christian is a person who believes in the principles, teachings, and pillars of Christianity. Christians believe in Jesus Christ who is considered the head of the Christian faith. To be labeled a good Christian, your life must reflect the tenets of the Christian faith. Similarly, a Christian band is one whose songs and lifestyles reflect the principles and beliefs of Christianity.

A Christian band must publicly label itself as “Christian” and must have Christian members whose lifestyles reflect the beliefs of Christianity. Their songs must contain spirituality, biblical terms, and references. These songs must be suitable for playing or performing in religious gatherings, spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, and messages of perseverance, hope, forgiveness, love, and faith in God.

Two members of the band; the late Chris Cornell and guitarist Morello confirmed they had Christian backgrounds. Both grew up in a “Catholic” home which is considered the world’s largest Christian denomination, but began questioning the faith at an early age and prefer to be open-minded rather than subscribing to an organized religious group.

Though Audioslave had clearly stated that they are not a Christian band, we can’t deny the fact that some elements of spirituality and Christianity are apparent in their songs. We attribute this to the fact that some members of the band had Christian backgrounds though they chose a different path later and the individual introspection of members.

For instance, the lyrics below from “Show me how to Live” by Audioslave portrays the songwriters appealing for divine guidance. A priest is mentioned in the lyrics and in Christianity, a priest is the religious leader of the Catholic faithful. Also, the songwriters acknowledge God as the creator of everything and the giver of life as known in Christianity and solemnly ask for guidance and direction from “the creator”.

And with the early dawn moving right along

I couldn’t buy an eyeful of sleep

And in the aching night under satellites…….

Built with stolen parts, a telephone in my heart

Someone get me a priest

To put my mind to bed, this ringing in my head

Is this a cure or is this a disease?

Nail in my head from my creator

You gave me life, now show me how to live

On a sea of grey, on my knees, I pray to you

Help me find the dawn of the dying day

To this, I relate

To tell you I need you today”.
