I believe this is more in reference to having your priorities straight. You're goal should be spreading the faith, not having a collection of really cool stuff. It's alright to have those things, as long as you keep your Calling in mind.

You definitely don't need one, although depending on what you're in the mood for they can be nice. For instance, I typically don't read the commentary in my Reformation Study Bible unless I feel I need more clarification.
