  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why does the Bible use parables?

The Bible uses parables in order to hide bad news from you. Even if you knew the truth you wouldn't accept it anyway. So what little you could have gotten has been taken away from you (Matthew 13:12).

Why would anybody hide good news?

Matthew 13:10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?”

Matthew 13:11 ..., Because it has been given to you to know ... but not to them ....
Matthew 13:12 For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
Matthew 13:13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.

The "you" in Matthew 13:11 refers to a very small group - the disciples. Today, you and I are the "them. The "you" is a very small group who is able to open their own eyes.

Whoever opens their eyes, more will be given. Whoever closes their eyes, what little they could have gotten will be taken away. Hence, the form is parables.

You refuse to see the truth because it is unpleasant. So the truth has been denied to you. This is like the Jews in the 30s in Nazi Germany. They refused to see the truth because it was too unpleasant.

This next part is really interesting.

Matthew 13:14 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says:

‘Hearing you will hear and shall not understand,
And seeing you will see and not perceive;

Matthew 13:15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull.
Their ears are hard of hearing,
And their eyes they have closed,
Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.’

If the people would open up their eyes and ears, then they would know the truth. And Jesus would heal them. Until that time, most people will go down the wrong path.

You can learn the truth of parables and other complex language in the Bible, but the exercise is mostly pointless. You will reject it. That assumes you even care, which you likely don't.

How did Jesus interpret the parable of the sower in Matthew 13?

The parable of the sower is about farming issues. Jesus said it was about Christianity. How can that be?

Jesus took the concepts from the parable and applied them to an already existing real world scenario - the spread of Christianity. The news is bad.

You need to find the hidden bad news. The parable of the sower is bad news for the spread of Christianity.
