View Full Version : Which book in the bible is your favourite?

because of the number of books in the bible, the poll options are shortened into OT and NT, so if your favourite book fell into the NT, please tick NT. Sorry for the inconvenience.

So which is your favourite, and why?

Psalms, because J. Vernon McGee taught me that the Book of Psalms is the mind of God and condenses the entire Bible beginning to end into one book of the Bible. If you read it with that understanding, it is a resplendent writing.

For me it's the book of Job. I like how God just speaks in Job. I think God speaks more in Job than any other book of the Bible. God showcases exactly who he is and what he does that truly makes him God. The book of Job truly requires you to bow down to God and worship him.

Ecclesiastes all the way! Probably because the book is so poetic. Reading it at first may be a huge downer, but the last two verses: "Here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and obey His commands, for this is the sole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgement, every hidden thing, whether it be good or evil." -(Paraphrased by JunkyardGospel) so elegantly explain how to avoid having a life filled with vanity. Coupled along with John 3:16, it is an excellent scripture.

New Testament all the way...its about my Lord Jesus Christ...my Savior and my Messiah!! lol I have been reading threw the Old Testament because it wouldn't be fair unless I had done so and I have a lot of insight and I think the Old Testament is very interesting, just I enjoy the message the New Testament is about. If I had to pick my favorite books in the New Testament, it would be a tie: Revelations and John.

I love many portions of the Holy Bible, but I must say that the New Testament is my favorite because the hope and faith of man in Jesus Christ is the primary topic.

I enjoy the writing of the Apostle Paul probably the most. The Apostle Paul reveals a mystery not known to men of other ages, Jesus Christ, HIM crucified, and the Gospel of God's Grace. I find Romans and Ephesians to be particularly beautiful in expressing the GOOD NEWS which is the GOSPEL OF GOD'S GRACE. God's matchless Grace and Love is made manifest in the GIFT of HIS Son, Jesus Christ, crucified on the cross in payment for our sins.

To me, this is the most joyous portion of the entire Bible. Jesus paid it all for you and me.

Thanks be unto GOD for HIS unspeakable GIFT!, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.

Love In Christ.

I like the new testament the best, because I love reading about the life of Jesus, and about how his love has set me free. I think the old testament for me is a bit impersonal, because I'm reading about other people's lives, but in the new I'm reading and thinking 'he did this for me, wow!' and I just feel it talks to me on a more personal level. However the OT also has taught me some amazing things!

As for my favourite book, I would say have to say Ephesians or Philippians!

I'm gonna have to say Isaiah: just read a few of these verses:

- Isa 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

- Isa 44:22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

- Isa 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Isaiah has inspirational verses, salvation verses, prophetic verses... it's like the Gospels, Psalms, Proverbs, and Revelation all wrapped up in one really cool scroll!

"The word "Testament", as a translation of the Greek word diatheke (which means covenant), has been nothing less than a great calamity; for, by its use, truth has been effectually veiled all through the centuries; causing a wrong turning to be taken as to the purpose and character of this present Dispensation, by which the errors of tradition have usurped the place of important truth.

The word "Testament" as s name for a collection of books is unknown to Scripture. It comes to us through the Latin Vulgate. This was the rendering in the older Latin Versions before JEROME'S time; but, JEROME, while using foedus or pactum for the Heb. berith in the O.T., unfortunately reverted to testamentum in his revision of his N.T. translation (A.D. 382-405). Some of the Latin Fathers preferred instrumentum, much in the sense of our legal use of the word (*1). RUFINUS uses the expression novum et vetus instrumentum (*2), and AUGUSTINE uses both words instrumentum and testamentum (*3).

From the Vulgate, the word testament passed both into the English Bibles and the German. The Greek word is diatheke, which means "covenant", and the R.V. substitutes this meaning in every place except two (Heb. 9:16, 17, on which see the notes). But even this word was never used as the title for the collection of books which make up the New Testament so called.

When these books were placed beside the books of the Hebrew Canon it became desirable, if not necessary, to distinguish them; and, as the then two Dispensations were already spoken of in Scripture as "old" and "new" (2Cor. 3:6. Heb. 8:6-13), so the books, which were connected with them, came to be called by the same names also.

In Ex. 24:7 and 2Kings 23:2, 21, we read of "the book of the covenant", and this distinction of the two covenants was already confirmed by 2Cor. 3:16, 14, where the Apostle speaks of "the reading of the old covenant".

The term "New Covenant" is indeed a Scriptural expression, but it is not used of a collection of books. It is used of the great prophecy and promise of Jer. 31:31-32:40 and Ezek. 37:26 (which is referred to in Heb. 8:8-12; 9:15-21; 10:15-18).

From here (http://www.angelfire.com/nv/TheOliveBranch/append95.html).

But to answer your question, I like Jeremiah. :)

I think that Job is fantastic because it helps to put all of our pain and misery into context. Here is a man whose example we can follow. I know we are told to follow Jesus' example, but that seems impossible!! Realising the pain that Job went through helped me on a year abroad to get my own minute problems into perspective!!

Then there is Ecclesiastes which says it all so simply - Everything is meaningless, but for a relationship with God!! Awesome!!

I don't read the stories in Genesis literally; but they're marvelous stories and they offer tremendous insights into the nature of humanity, and also of God's relationship with us.

And I may not read Job or Jonah literally -- but Job DOES why so often the righteous end up suffering while mean-minded @#$%s seem to get off scott-free; and Jonah shows that God DOES listen to people who are not of "the chosen faith" (which is what made Jonah so mad).

I'd hate to give up the wisdom of Ecclesiastes and Proverbs, or the lyric poetry of Psalms. And I do believe that Ezekiel and Jeremiah very neatly address the idols of today, e.g., "I'm right, so you're wrong," materialism, greed, disregard for anybody but oneself, etc.

Likewise, I'd sure hate to give up Luke/Acts; or theological monuments such as Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, and James.

I WOULD like to see a lot of the emphasis taken off literal interpretations of the Book of Revelation. God ALONE knows when things are going to happen. We don't. Some of us won't be living at the end of the day, some of us may live in houses which are struck and demolished by tornadoes, most of us will have perfectly normal days -- and if we can't make THESE kinds of predictions, what makes us think that we're capable of figuring out the hows and whys of the End Times? In the meantime, there are plenty of people to feed, plenty of people who need clothing, plenty of sick people to visit, plenty of people who are alone, and/or mourning, and/or imprisoned who would really appreciate the visit. THAT'S what we need to be doing today -- not trying to figure out who "666" is (after all, we all know that it's either William Jefferson Clinton or George Walker Bush, depending on which political party we happen to belong to! ;) ).

O.T.= Psalms, because of it's words of personal encouragement, comfort, and high exaltation of God's sovereignty and loving condescension towards us.

I Love the whole bible, I think that the New Testament is not complete without the Old, and the Old without the New. I strongly believe that the New Testament can only really be understood in its grandness, if there is a understanding of the Old first.

I do have a few favourite books in the Bible at the moment, all for different reasons.

1. Psalms - no book speaks to the soul of man like this book does. It is like worship in words. I love worship.

2. The Acts of the Apostles - full of excitement and great ways to put the gospel into action. You want to learn how to witness, read acts. I also love this book because it gives real examples of how people were saved, and how the church started where the epistles were written to the churches. A great book to explain salvation to someone from.

3. I and II Timothy - great wisdom for young ministers and second and further generation christians.

4. Isaiah - It really should be one of the gospels, it gives such a clear picture of Christ.

5. John - Reveals how real Jesus can be to an individual. Also explains in deapth who Jesus was, and how human he was, although he was fully God.

6. Proverbs - each verse can preach a thousand sermons.

My favourite book is Romans, so I voted New Testament.

I love the Gospels, I love Acts, and I'm a hug fan of every one of Paul's letters (and Hebrews, whether that was Paul or someone else). He was so frank, concise, and brilliant. I love the epistles of James, John, and Jude. Basically every book in the New Testament is a favourite in its own way.

I love Genesis, as it is the foundation for the universe's origins. I love Psalms for the same reasons everyone does. I love Proverbs especially - it's probably my favourite Old Testament book. I love Ecclesiastes, too, probably only behind Proverbs. Esther and Ruth are lovely stories.

But eventually, if I did have to choose a favourite book of the Bible, it would be Romans, and largely due to Romans 10:9. I believe Romans is one of the main books explaining what the Bible means to us today as Christians, and how we should live as Christians.

Hm... That's a good question.

I would have to say it's a toss-up between Isaiah (as he had many relevant things to say, for all time), 1 Corinthians (which I believe has a lot for us to learn from as a church, especially here in North America), and Revelation (not because of any timeline or future events, but because of the relevance of its message and the beauty of its writing)...

This book supports many of my more progressive views.

Pacifism
If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 5:38

Be humble
Be careful not to do your "acts of righteousness" before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 6:1

This greatly affects my views the issue of school and other public prayer.
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 6:6

Simple living leaves more time and money to help others.
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where theives break in and steal. 6:19

I could go on and on....:)

Pacifism

You mean like this verse? :)

Matthew 10:34

This greatly affects my views the issue of school and other public prayer.
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 6:6

So, in your opinion, there should be no prayer in church? Everyone should just pray alone in their closets? I don't think that is what Christ was saying. He was probably talking about legalists like the Pharasees, who thought they were better than others because they were more "spiritual."

There isn't enough appreciation of the Old Testament nowadays. Perhaps that is because many so-called "pastors" teach that the Old Testament is no longer relevant. :( Personally, I think there is more meat in the Old Testament than in the New Testament, because the Old Testament requires us to really put on our thinking caps. (That is not to say I don't like the NT --- I do like the NT very much).

because of the number of books in the bible, the poll options are shortened into OT and NT, so if your favourite book fell into the NT, please tick NT. Sorry for the inconvenience.

So which is your favourite, and why?
I can't pick... The OT finds its fulfilment in the NT... it runs parralel... You find Jesus in every book in the OT...
But if I really had to pick, I'd say Isaiah and John.
