For several years I have heard my brothers and sisters in Christ make the statement - "The Bible says, that God helps those that help themselves."

Does anyone know if this quote is from the Bible and if so, where it is?

no it is not. I think it is from Poor Rchard s Almmanac by Ben Franklin. it is one of the most misplaced quotes there is.

That is exactly where it is from. I knew from my studies of the scriptures that it was not in there, but did not know where it was from. I just found out myself from a forum on quotes.

I find that the Bible teaches us that "God helps those that can not help themselves" He also helps those that help themselves and sometimes he helps those that don't even know they need help. But he never helps those that don't "want" any help.

Hmmm.... I heard "God helps those who help themselves, and God help those who get caught helping themselves."

God helps those who help others.

Didymus, it is hardly that bad. I can guarantee that you and I are only one generation away from extinction, but surely the world will survive without us. ;)

>>"The Bible says, that God helps those that help themselves."

We are in a covenant relationship with God, and we do have our part, that we have to perform in the covenant. Then we can be sure that God will do His part.

Covenant theology seems to have gotten lost somewhere along the way. But it would be a good idea for us all to run a search on the word covenant in the Bible to learn for ourselves just what it means to be in a covenant relationship with God.

God had a covenant relationship with Isreal, but they were cut off because of unbelief. Paul warns people to be careful they do not fall into unbelief as well. Our part is to believe, if we do our part, then we can be sure that God will do His part of the Covenant.

Let me give you another example. The Bible says, IF we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our heart. Our part is to "delight ourselves in the Lord" IF we do our part, we can be sure that God will do His part.

Again, the Bible says if we seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, He supply whatever we need. Our part is of course to "seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousnes" if we do our part, we can be sure that God will do His part to supply all of our needs.

Many, many, many promises are given for those who are righteous. That is why Jesus said, blessed are those who hunger and thirst as to diligently seek after God's righteousnes. I can assure you from experance, they will be abundantly blessed above and beyond all they would ever think or imagine. Thanks, JohnR7
