Does anyone have an opinion concerning the proposed legitimacy of the shroud of turin? If so why or why not...

I like Lemke's approach. It may be, and that's cool if it is, but let's keep our sights on more important things:
"...But for us, after we have each come to terms in our own minds with the question of the Shroud of Turin’s authenticity, let it then be put aside; or, at most, the information used to assist others who are searching. It is an interesting relic with an interesting tale to tell. For many, no doubt, Christians and non-Christians alike, it may be the most intriguing, and perhaps instructive, relic of all to have come down through the centuries. But Scripture and God’s record therein of this world’s history, and his plan for that world which is to come, a plan centered on the cross of Calvary, is of greater interest and of far greater significance to us. It is that which will be most on our minds and hearts when we see the Lord coming dressed in glory on the Final Day. It will not be the ancient piece of linen, special as it may have been, left behind in a borrowed tomb which bore the name of another, now almost 2000 years ago."

By the way that article examines a lot of the proofs, so it isn't too bad of a read, if you are interested.

A testing laboratory that I have used for years to help us in investigating problems at work was one of the testing labs to run the dating study on the shroud, the McCrone Institute...that's my claim to shroud fame! :D
If you study church history it isn't hard to see the embellishment man has put on Christ's Gospel / Word / Logos. ...as if the Word were not capable of standing on its own. Relics, indulgences, purgatory, are just of few of the things conceived by man that are add-ins. Fake relics are not unknown. It wouldn't surprise me that the shroud is a fake...created to influence the masses because some religious figure somewhere didn't trust the Gospel to do the job.
However...I wished with all my might that the test results would have indicated the material was 2000 years old.
Caelum, what's with all these questions lately...you aren't thinking of going RCC now are you?

This is actually one relic I think could be authentic. There's no explanation that I've seen that can explain the image on the shroud. And the Jerusalem limestone, the flower spores, and the blood stains themselves, etc. on it are pretty convincing for me. I too, hope it can ultimately be dated to about 33 A.D. if it ever gets redated (removing the biomass that might skew the carbon dating).
But, knowledge and a God given trust in Christ Jesus is far greater than the shroud itself.
